How difficult is it to get into an Anthropology program? (Undergraduate)

Hey everyone! I am a transfer student from a cc applying to four private universities for this upcoming fall (Stanford, University of Southern California, University of San Diego, and Santa Clara University). I know each school may be different, but my question is how hard is it usually to get into an undergraduate Anthropology program? Does anyone know how competitive Anthropology is compared to other majors? I am aware that some of the schools on my list, such as Stanford, has extremely competitive admissions for transfer students, but I’m still taking the shot. But anyways, I have taken a reasonable amount of Anthro classes at my current college. I am in love with this major and was so glad I found a major that really reached out to me! Thank you all for the help :-bd

Anthropology usually is not a competitive major; it’s typically open to any student that wants to study it. And none of those four schools, if I recall correctly, admits students to specific majors: they admit students to the university in general and then they select their major.

Are you also applying to public universities as well?

@juillet Gotcha! That would make sense. And no I am not applying to public colleges. My first semester at cc, I took some pre-college reading/writing classes that didn’t transfer. UC’s and CSU’s want at least 60 units, and I will have 50 something by the end of this spring semester. Also I didn’t have AP credits to make up for those other units! So just applied to privates as they are more lenient with credits.

You applied to the Fall 17 semester and haven’t heard back from any of your targets yet?
that doesn’t sound right… at least one of these schools should have gotten back to you by now.
I don’t know your GPA and other stats so, it is impossible to assess the likelihood of your admission. Generally, if you haven’t won an Olympic medal recently, Stanford is really unlikely, they simply don’t take more than a handful of transfers each year. USC takes a lot of transfers but, still is looking for a high stats - they aren’t typically generous with merit aid. Santa Clara and USD are much smaller than USC so, there are fewer seats. They are similarly selective - they also don’t typically offer much $ to transfers. Full tuition at all 4 of these schools is a LOT of money so, i hope you’ve planned accordingly.

If this round doesn’t work out… follow the TAG program to the letter. that way you know exactly what to take and what the GPA threshold will be - imagine this cycle with no suspense… kinda cool, huh.

Good luck

@NCalRent Got accepted to USD! Haven’t got any rejections yet since I recently just sent my SCU application. Stanford releases their decisions next week for transfers and USC is releasing their decisions throughout this month. Yeah I know Stanford is difficult, however I just applied to see if I would get in. A lot of people don’t apply because chances are low, but at the same time I feel like you have to take the chance and just do it since you’ll never know hehe.Yeah pretty expensive, but willing to go. Getting help from my parents which I really appreciate. Thank you for the feedback
