How difficult is UMass Amherst to transfer into?

I have a number of friends who currently go to UMass Amherst, and they have told me that it's supposedly easier to get in as a transfer student than as an incoming freshman. Is this true?

I am going to community college locally and intend to apply every semester until I get in because I'd really like to go to UMass since I like their Anthropology Department and it's the best school for my price range.

I was rejected when I applied for entry this fall, and had a 3.1 GPA (or so), 1960 on the SAT and did well enough on the MCAS to get the John and Abigail Adams Tuition Waiver. I plan to do VERY well at CC while I'm there and work my butt off on my application and essays - I have a number of recomendations lined up from HS, but will try to make nice with my CC teachers too.

So, any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

From the UMass Amherst web site:

Massachusetts community college students who initially enrolled in Fall 2009 or later in an approved MassTransfer program are guaranteed admission to UMass Amherst, as long as they (1) have a minimum GPA of 2.5 at the time of graduation and (2) are in good academic, financial, and disciplinary status at all previously attended colleges. Please note that some majors may require a higher GPA or prerequisite coursework. For more information about approved programs, visit the MassTransfer website: [MassTransfer / Massachusetts Department of Higher Education](MassTransfer / Massachusetts Department of Higher Education)

hey! did you eventually get accepted? my story is weirdly very similar to yours and I applied a couple months ago to UMass Amherst for Fall 2012.

I will go to Umass Amherst in the fall 2012 as a senior after 2 year at Umass Boston for Electrical Engineering. And you right, transfer to Umass Amherst is easier than apply to it during high school (since i got rejected there when i was in high school too)
