How difficult to get into Honors

Thinking of applying to George Mason for fall 2014. My stats 3.4 uwgpa all in honors level classes, ACT 28 but retook last Saturday and hoping for 30. I'm Hispanic from Minnesota and wanting to study Psychology with a double/minor in Womens/Gender studies. Do I have a chance for the Honors program?

I know you have a chance, even with a 28. A 30 would be better. I can’t remember the exact averages of last year’s Honors College freshman. 28 was definitely below average, but my kid got in. I’m sure other factors influenced the decision (but I don’t know what they were.)

I don’t know how in state/out of state affects you. You do have to apply Early Admission.

Acceptance into the Honors College changed GMU from my D’s safety to her #1 choice. She started there last month and is doing really well and enjoying it.

If she has a chance at the Honors College plus the location, close to DC, would make this school her #1 choice. We’ll apply since they’ve waived the application fee and essay, still have to do essay for Honors. The only thing DH is worried about is the school having a commuter reputation. I’ve heard that’s changed in the last few years. We have not visited but if she gets into Honors will visit early in 2014.

It is true about the commuter reputation, and I have also heard that has changed quite a bit in the past few years. However, what I have found this year (my D’s freshman year) is that while many students live on campus, they go home for the weekend, since it’s so close.

That can be good or bad, depending on your student. It may also make a difference what dorm my D is in, and how used to school the students are, etc.

Honors dorms are very, very nice!

Since my D started school this fall, I’ve been watching the campus police blotter with great interest to see exactly what is happening, and where.
