How do colleges look at your SAT scores?

Do they look at each sitting seperately, or do they choose the best test scores out all all the SATs you take?

For example,

if your first sitting was a:

CR: 630
math: 800
writing: 740

and second was a:

CR: 690
math: 790
writing: 780

do they make your SAT score the best scores combined? So therefore a 690, 800, 780 which makes a 227? Or do they look at each SAT score seperately based on sitting and therefore my best would be a 226?

I'm just wondering how this works. If you were curious, my 2nd example was my first SAT score and my first example was my PSAT. I plan on retaking the SAT to raise my mediocre CR but I want to know how it is judged if I do well on CR but do badly on writing (the 12 essay brought my score up). If the information is important, my top schools are Duke and Northwestern.

each school has its own policy- check the admissions websites to see what the individual school does with scores
