I know it’s not necessary to put that in, but I am really interested in makeup. I follow a lot of makeup artists on instagram and especially youtube and have spent hours practicing my makeup skills and even did my friends’ makeup for formal. Is there any way to express this hobby in my skills sections of my Georgetown application? Or is it better to just leave it out. My other skill is fluency in spanish, but I’m not sure if I should add anything else.
That’s almost every girl in my school.
Im sorry but if you want them to consider it a hobby you probably have to be one of those :
a ) A special effects makeup artist(or practicing , since it needs talent)
b ) Attended some sort of makeup/cosmetology course that provides a certificate of attendance or something.
Saying " I really love makeup just like every other girl but Im extra good at putting eyeliners than most girls" makes you sound like a typical stereotypical female teen so I think you should just leave it out.
I disagree with attics. I do not know what the skills section of the Georgetown application is but I have two daughters who both wear makeup and enjoy buying it but they do not do what you do. Sounds like you have a passion for makeup which is different than the average high school girl who just slaps it on their face and walks out the door. I think this passion could have made for an interesting common app essay as well.
Writing an essay about it vs. putting it as a skill is different. If you can’t describe the depth of interest adequately, I’d definitely leave it out. How much room do you have for detail?
@2muchquan not much room. I think max is like 50 words. I figure I’ll just leave it out and maybe try to work it into one of my essays at some point. Attics is right, I guess it isn’t really special.
What might have helped could be doing something more “organized” with it, like being on the makeup/hair committee for the drama guild, or something.
I read for fun, but I wouldn’t put that on a college app. I think you’re making the right choice to leave it off; you can always make it the topic of a kick-ass essay.
You could make a blog, youtube channel, work/volunteer at some kind of modeling place where you can do the makeup of models or you can be in theater/dance and do the makeup of the actors/dancers.
At my school, there are kids who volunteer to do the makeup for musicals and plays so that is a possibility.
