I've done a lot of work with make up and would say that I'm pretty knowledgeable about it. I treat it like an art. It's actually a lot more complex than some people may think. I've been the make up artist for some performances but I've never done anything really major with it (nothing professional). However, I'm really interested in it and I don't think many people who apply to the same schools I plan to (mostly Ivies) have the same interest in it as I do. Just some other background info about myself, I have a 2250 and a 33 ACT. I also have leadership positions in MUN and City Council. I'm a national-qualifier for debate. I'm also EIC of my school newspaper and write for a variety of publications. I plan to apply to many Ivies and similar tier schools.

However, I understand that some people may view make up as a waste of time/insignificant. Should I list it as an EC? Or should I just leave it out?

If you’re passionate about it, absolutely put it on your application! From the way you described it in this post, I’m sure you could write a great essay about why you love it and why it’s a complex artform much more difficult than people would expect.

I know two women who do this professionally for A-list celebs. Have you considered seeking ways to insert yourself into the craft in a semi-professional way? See if there are shows that come to town that you can volunteer. You’d need to sell yourself to the actual make-up professionals but who knows? Neither of my friends intended to do this. Their reputations just grew from word of mouth. Whenever a certain group of entertainers travelled to their towns, they would be called upon to come work. They didn’t give up their lives and have to travel either. It is very lucrative for them.

Thanks for the responses so far everyone :)

@Waverly: Do you mean metaphors as in how it relates to other aspects of my life? @T26E4: I’ve actually done it for a couple of shows that came to town. Again, most of these shows weren’t major and I was just a volunteer.

Do you guys think that it would be worth mentioning my work with make up if I don’t write an essay centered completely around it? For my activity essay, I feel like it would be better for me to highlight some of my leadership positions. I’m thinking of mentioning it briefly in my main commonapp essay though.

For your essay, stay focused. I wouldn’t try to squeeze this in just for sake of mentioning it if it wasn’t your orig goal. Just elaborate w/a few lines in your activities slot.
