SCEA screws everything up. That’s why my daughter held off on Yale and Stanford (the two SCEA schools) until RD so she could apply EA to MIT (admit), WPI (admit), UConn (admit) and Caltech (deferred). Having excellent choices in hand in December enabled her to drop safeties and schools of lesser interest from her RD list and focus on a few which she will seriously consider if admitted with strong aid packages (also waiting on aid from MIT). Unfortunately, RPI used to let medalists apply EA, but that option was dropped so she had to wait until RD.

Adviceplease - your whole post that was e-mailed to me did not come up.

smoda61 – Thanks…hmmmn interesting that it didn’t post. I’ve had some odd things with posts lately.

I’ve actually seen this posting problem happen a couple of other times in the past week. I thought that it was me but I am beginning to realize that every now and then a post does not go up.

Adviceplease - D is also my second. The difference is that the first was a S who was interested in CS in engineering. So his set of schools was a little different. D is biological sciences; neuroscience, biotech, etc. Her schools could be tech (great for the academics but she is also a dancer) or LA (maybe not as deep in the technical offerings). Time will tell.

Padre - I agree with you about SCEA. It was a tough decision in the fall on whether to do it or not.

Finally received the merit aid award! Total of $22k in scholarships per year. This may be enough make it happen for my daughter. It’ll be hard to turn down the full scholarships she was offered but everything works out for a reason.

Just got my fin aid awards. Pretty good I must say :D. 10k merit aid, 11k grant, and 5k room&board. 9.5 in loans (6.5 subsidized), 2k work-study.

People, keep checking for links at the application status site. More financial scholarships were just posted today.

strange…

It now says there was an update added today, 3/17. WHen I click on it, it looks like it’s a 2 page letter. But there’s nothing written??

snailmail acceptance letter came today, no fin aid info, though.

Anyone else?

Did you click the “>>” button to go to the next page?

Funny story: My dad went to Case Western Reserve and my mom to RPI, and they’re competing as to who will offer me a better deal. RPI admitted me to the Presidential Scholar’s program first, so she was winning; then Case offered me $27,500/year, so he was winning. But my update includes $15K in merit/room & board and a potential $12.5K in loans/earnings… adding up to an optimal $27,500/year. XD They’ll be battling each other over that one.

ya…i got the same letter with no money…really disappointing though b/c i am way above scholarship stats for rpi…they are staring to fall of the list b/c of this

hawkswim, did you check to see if there was any new update at the application status site online? That’s the only place we’ve found anything; there was no award info with the snail mail admit letter. award info was only online.

hawkswim09 – We received the letter in the mail today and it was just the acceptance letter. The financial aid information was only posted online and not until yesterday…maybe yours is still being processed?

I understand, thru rpi financial aid, that the site will be updated through Friday, 3/20.

We got our letter today and we need $9,500 in loans. We are quoted a total of 27,500 for his freshman year. Does that sound right?

finally they sent the scholarship in the mail along with a nice hat and sticker…this is a relief because w/o it i don’t think i was going to attend, this makes things a little easier.

My son wanted a shirt instead of the hat but its the thought that counts.

Nope… It looks like this…

rensselaer medal 15,000

Loans 9,500

student on campus earnings 2,000

student earnings from summer 1,000

Total 27,500

Does the rest come from me? It doesn’t say I need anything else…

no other things are mentioned

I did the math and this is what i found out

Total tuition $54,160.00
financial aid $27500.00

Total left $24,660
Is this what the parents owe?
I have twins going to college this year and we only make 80,000 a year.
We cant afford this at all…
Am I doing this correct?

Our FAFSA says EFC is $15,600

cyber - unfortunately, I believe that that is what it is saying. Your child probably got an e-mail about the extra hours that FA will be open if you have questions. It might be worth a call.

I did call and that is in fact what it means. She told me to appeal the decision and explain circumstances and I will do that but it looks like Rensselaer is out for us. It was a nice run but we cant afford $50,00 a year between 2 kids. I guess its University of Maine for my son where he has tuition paid for and a merit scholarship of $7000.00 for room and board.
