UT Austin received my information for FASFA and now I need to send additional requirements.
It says it could all be done via IRS Retrieval Form, but my parents did "married filing seperately".
Because they did this, i cant use the IRS Retrieval Form and now it says I need to call the IRS and request a tax return transcript for the student AND the parents, but I didn't file anything so I'm confused??
And do I just mail this transcript to UT then??
And do I request a transcript from my mom AND my dad??

Im so stressed and confused :( and why did mine need to be verified? is there always a verification process? I'm just a dependent and I tried requesting one but I couldn't obviously because I am not a tax filer so how is ut supposed to get my student tax return transcript, or is that only applicable if I filed taxes?

Yes, you need a tax return transcript for each parent. You can order them online here:

[Order a Transcript](Get Transcript | Internal Revenue Service)

It will be sent to your home and you mail it to the school. Did they give you an address to mail it to?

If you weren’t required to file a return, there should be a non-filer statement for yourself that you fill out and sign. Normally it is provided by the school and mailed back to them. They didn’t say anything to that affect or that the form was on their website for printing?

The message you got was computer-generated. If you didn’t file, just contact the school and tell them you need a non-filer statement.

Being selected for verification is luck-of-the-draw. Don’t worry about it … just provide the info & you’ll be fine. Although I WILL warn you … an issue that was a problem for a number of students at the school where I used to work was parents who filed separately & one or both filed head of household. This is not an acceptable filing status for married people, who can only file as Married filing jointly or Married filing separately (not head of household) … unless they fit the very narrow definition of those who can file that way (see IRS regulations for an explanation). I point this out because incorrect filing status can actually keep you from being able to get financial aid.
