How do I show interest?

Im applying to a couple schools and I really want to show my interest.

What is the best way to show my interest at this point? I mean. Im starting my applications, and you know, all that college prep stuff. Should I send emails to their offices? Letters? Phone calls?

What should I say?

Go to the college web sites and sign up for their mailing lists, first of all...I don't know how to make them know you personally at this point before submitting applications, except that you should send your standardized test scores to them...haven't ever really heard of letters or phone calls being effective

When you visit the school, ask to sit in on a class or e-mail the dean of admissions for an informal informative interview. That might help.

And SBERLIN's advice about mailing lists is a good idea too.

^ WHat about if you can't visit the school? (ie., 2000 miles away)

Meet the admissions counselor who comes to your high school. Go to college fairs where the schools might show up. Go to their websites and find out where their "road shows" will be and when they might be in your area. Sign up for an alumni interview.

If you can't visit, make sure you find out as much as you can about the school in other ways--website, CC forum, mailings, etc. Then, when you write your "Why college X" essay, you will have specific things to say and not just the generic comments about it being such a great school.

Meet the admissions deans when you can, try to visit, try to get an interview, request info in the mail. It's nothing to worry about. Just try to learn more about the school for your own sake, not to try to budge yourself in. Why would you e-mail them? Oh, I know what you're thinking. You're saying to yourself, "Well, if I e-mail them anything, they'll notice that I'm showing interest in the school. I have nothing to ask them, but at least it might help me get in..." No, no, no. Don't e-mail them if you don't need to ask them anything. Just try to find out what you want to know.
