How do PTEs work?

I can't seem to find any information about them. The way I understand them is you email a professor for one, and if they give it to you you can enroll in a full class? Why doesn't everyone on waitlists ask for one?

They might ask for them, but some professors don’t give out any PTEs, or only give them under special circumstances.

Because people on waitlists might be lazy, since if someone drops and they’re in spot 1 they automatically get enrolled.

Some professors give out pte’s as soon as a class is filled to capacity, others wait until the first week of class, and like dinoian said some don’t give them out at all. So if you’re on the wait list you’re really in a better position than someone not on it, and some professors will give PTE’s to those on the waitlist before those not on the waitlist.

and it’s not only for people on waitlists. (if you are on the waitlist you are pretty much gonna get in anyway.) it can also be for if the class is closed (i.e. it is full and has no waitlist, or the waitlist is full), or if you don’t meet the enrollment restrictions, and stuff like that

So, what exactly should I ask?

"Hi,

I’m interested in “CLASS NAME” and would like to enroll in discussions IDNUMBER, IDNUMBER, or IDNUMBER. Is there any way I could get a PTE?

Thank you,

Name"

?

Basically yes. Try to put in a reason there as to why you really need to be in the class so he feels like giving you one.
