How do selective college admissions view starting businesses as ECs?

I plan to work this summer on a tech startup, but I’ve been told by many that colleges look down upon extracurriclars that don’t involve giving back to the community (ex: a for profit business). I already have another company that I am a co-founder of that donates 50 percent of all monthly profits to a specific charity, among other extracurriclars that show extensive leadership and are very unique. Is the whole for-profit thing true or no? Thanks

We need to read no farther. Anyone telling you this is just making stuff up.

But I’m curious why you care. At the start of March you posted this

Just do what interests you. Your passion will come through. Write a great, personal essay. Best of luck!

Agreeing with @glido.

From what I can interpret, it sounds like you are worried about this and that you might be doing it to look good to colleges.

But it will help you, as you started your own company, you can pay the full price of tuition with zero financial aid. Money speaks.

Whoever is telling you that is wrong. Colleges care about what EC’s you are PASSIONATE about. It clearly shows through your efforts and your business growth that you are passionate about this EC.

This is silly. Do what you want first. Do not worry about what colleges want. It makes you inauthentic which is not good for you and is not good for admissions. Being enterprising is good. But remember college is about academics and academic potential primarily.Thinking about things larger than yourself is also attractive.

But don’t let the tail wag the dog.
