How do teacher recs work?

I have a a sort of convoluted question here, so bear with me please. A few months ago I gave a humanities teacher who hated me a set of envelopes and common app rec forms for all of my schools. At the time, she was the only option and I needed a humanities teacher. This was because my other humanities option had gone on maternal leave and hadn't answered to my emails. I had no choice because I was applying early. In hindsight I shouldn't have given her all the envelopes for all my schools, but it is what it is. However, the english teacher on leave has returned quite recently and is very happy to write me a rec. She is much more competent of a writer, knows me better as a person, and actually likes me. (in short, I think she can make a difference). I will give her my rec forms and envelopes next week for January deadlines. However, my question is this....how will colleges know which rec to read? Will they read them all? If I state on the common app to only read my science teacher and my english teacher (the one that likes me), will they disregard the unflattering piece that my old teacher sends? If not, will it be a good idea to go up to the first rec writer and ask her not to send any letters? I still would like to get an A in her class, and asking her to give me back my rec forms might do me in as i am hovering at a 90% right now. However at the same time, I got rejected from my ED school with what I believed to have been a very solid resume and stats ( but it was an ivy, so who knows). Anyway, Im going to assume that the first rec teacher was the cause, so I really must resolve this. (She really, really did not like my attitude). So ccers....thoughts? questions? prob didn't explain this too well.

Sure, tell her very politely that it is not necessary to send the remaining envelopes in. Explain that you feel the other teacher knows you a little better. If she hasn’t done anything with them yet, she’ll be happy to have that much less work to do.
