Hey, I was just wondering how the students at the local high school feel about the prestigious boarding schools in their town/students of said school.

buummpp

I'd like to know as well. There is a group on facebook called something like Andover is not Phillips Academy where basically some disgruntled Andover High School students spewed their hatred for Andover (Phillips Academy, that is) so that could be the way people at, say, Exeter High School feel as well...

Such close proximity to these schools has to have had somewhat of a halo effect though...

LOL Halo effect (thinks about the video game)

but seriously! It'll be hard to get an answer on here, but I'd love to hear about it.

I can speak from one person's experience---my husband grew up in Andover and is an Andover High grad. He said that they never envied the PA kids, but sometimes felt sorry for them when they saw them at the grocery store, ice cream shop, etc with a teacher driving a bus. (you know, the teachers sponsor weekend trips and drive everyone in a van) apparently to the local kids they thought the PA kids seemed sort of sad doing their errands with a teacher rather than their mom. That is just his feeling on it--probably wrong., but certainly nothing he envied.

From my husband's perspective, he was the captain of the high school football and basketball teams at Andover High, but knew he would never have been able to achieve that at PA because of the post grad kids. He was accepted at Princeton and attended, and also felt that he would have never been admitted there from PA because of the more intense competition. So, overall, he has no jealousy of PA, and never really interacted or knew any of the kids there, nor did his siblings. I think that high school kids are usually too involved with their own lives to really care too much about the kids at a rival school.

Hmm... That's interesting. What about Exeter?

One more thing about Andover---Phillips Academy plays Andover High in some sports, as described on the PA website as "a healthy local rivalry". I like that.

That they are snobby rich arrogant kids, quite frankly I don't blame them sometimes

Uhm, I'd like to direct everyone to these facebook groups:

its NORTH Andover, not fucking "Andover" | Facebook

From what I read, Andover can be a little sketchy at times, while Exeter was a bit nicer.

Here is one review from BSreview from an Andover '08:
"Watch out for the Andover townies, though-- although the majority have no problem with PA students, some have taken to screaming obscenities at us while they drive by Main Street on Friday and Saturday nights. It's never been a HUGE issue, but can get annoying. My best advice for incoming students is to just ignore it."

From Exeter '03:
"Although some townies could be sketchy in the random alleys at night, everyone was friendly, and there was plenty to do...and eat! There is an old- fashioned movie theatre downtown, along with all sorts of resturants, hair salons, ice cream, gift shops, and more. And it is really pretty."

The funny thing to me is that Andover is an upscale town. I wouldn't be suprised if PA were more ethnically and economically diverse.

The movie theatres going down.

I've never had any bad encounters with the local students at Exeter. On the other hand, during Exeter/Andover weekend this year, we traveled to Andover, and the local students there seemed to enjoy screaming obscenities at us.

Honestly, the whole Andover/townies dispute thing is probably not as big of a deal as people make it out to be. There's some animosity between certain members of the two groups, but it's not a dangerous situation. It's more of a joke than anything. You're looking at an upper class Massachusetts town and a boarding school.

Considering that a lot of students from the town of Andover go to PA, there's also a lot of mutual friendships with students at both PA and AHS. Sometimes athletes from Andover High do a postgraduate year at PA as well.

The height of the conflict probably occurs when an Andover High student sneaks into Commons for a free meal or something is yelled out from a passing car. (See Urban Dictionary: catboner)

"Apply again next year!"

I love it.

Haha. That's hilarious. Is Exeter the same way? Or are they nicer?
