Could anyone from BC answer the question? I’m a grade 11 student at a BC offshore school, basically the school curriculum is the same as that in BC. I’m gonna apply for U.S. colleges. Since my principal told me that my school would not calculate GPAs coz Canadian universities would take students’ transcripts and do their own calculations, I have been confused about how US universities will calculate my GPA.
P.S. I don’t have a literally “counselor” who can answer the question at school coz almost all of my schoolmates are going to Canada…
It will depend upon the university. As a general comment, AOs from US universities are familiar with Canadian grading scales and are also aware that there is less grade inflation in Canada.
@skieurope
That is debatable at the high school level.
I think that to get into a top US school you will need to be near the top of your high school class. If you are, then I wouldn’t worry about it. As @skieurope said, US schools will be familiar with Canadian grading systems.
One advantage that you might have is a relatively small number of Canadians applying to US schools. Given that US universities can be four times the cost of Canadian universities, and given the relatively random nature of admissions in the US (compared to in Canada), and given the difficulty finding jobs for Canadians graduating from US schools (since Canadian employers prefer to hire from Canadian universities, and getting a visa to work in the US is somewhere between hard, impossible, and unpredictable), there is not much reason for a Canadian to try to go to university in the US.
Many decades ago I was very close to the top of my Canadian high school class, at the top of my class in math and sciences, and did get into a top ranked US university (#1 in the world for what I majored in). Getting a job after graduation was quite a challenge.
