How do you all survive on so little sleep?

I got less than 2 hours sleep last night :(

Coffee, chocolate.

It’s worse in college, especially if you’re an engineering major and pre med like me. I’m up till at least midnight every night and sometimes as late as 3 a.m like now. It’s in part due to procrastination and research positions that take up ~15 hours a week.

I get up at 7 a.m 2/5 days and 9 a.m 3/5 so I think you just get used to getting little sleep. I always try and get at least 6 hours of sleep and I do sometimes take a quick nap in between classes.

I find that I can wake up on little sleep IF I sleep on the couch (no joke!). It’s kind of uncomfortable and is an easier place for me to get up from.

I’ve found that I perform better having gotten sleep over having prepared extensively for classes so once it gets to a certain part of the night, I just go to bed, regardless of whether or not my homework’s done and I’ve been doing fine.

I mean, what’s the point in going to class with your work ‘done’ if you’re passing out, right?

I’m averaging 8 to 10 a night at boarding prep.

COFFEE. i take naps every day too ^__^

I compensate for going to bed late by waking up at the last possible minute, haha. 1st period at my school starts at 8, and oftentimes I won’t wake up until 7:15.

Get up earlier, not sleep later.

Last night I pulled an all-nighter but fell asleep at 6 from exhaustion. I slept through my alarm clock and just woke up a while ago. No point going to class because I’ve already missed the bus, don’t know how to drive and it’s too far to walk to make it there before class ends. I’m going to get marked off attendance as having skipped class and my teachers will have a terrible impression of my work habits when I need references. Moral of the story: don’t pull all-nighters.

You guys sleep?

We don’t listen to 1D

I sleep about 4.5-5.5 hours a day, and most of the things other people do don’t help me. Caffeine makes me crash without giving an energy burst (at least with coffee, tea is rather neutral.) I try to take a 30 minute nap and instead I fall asleep for 2-4 hours.

I try to move around a bit whenever I get tired, maybe try to get some fresh air or run a bit. If it’s too dark to go out, just stretch and do some curl ups.

I can subsist off of extremely little amounts of sleep, but doing so regularly results in me taking 2-4 hour naps after coming home from after school activities (which obviously isn’t too great because by the time I wake up it’s already dark outside…).

Generally speaking i’ll get anywhere from 3-8 hours of sleep depending on my workload. Because of my work ethic it’s usually on the lower end though, lol.

When things get particularly bad, I’ve learned a few things to help me get through the long nights/school days:

1) Showers are a great way to stay awake.
2) If you’re pulling an all nighter, don’t pull out the caffeine too early. That way you won’t crash as the night goes on.
3) Take naps in class when you can afford to. I usually don’t like doing this, but if it helps me get through the day then so be it. Napping after turning in a test is probably the best time to do it, since most teachers won’t get offended.
4) Powernap! I can’t do this for the life of me, but if you’re someone who is able to sleep in increments of 15-20 minutes apparently it does wonders in terms of being able to stay up.
5) Prioritize. I tend to do my harder assignments after I wake up from my naps so that by the time i’m brain-dead in the middle of the night the work isn’t too exhausting.
6) Learn when to give up. Sleep deprivation is never fun, and it’s smarter to get your rest if you have an exam the following day. You can always finish your work in school if it’s due in a later period.

I average about 6-7 a night. My AP Euro teacher is insane, about 3 hours homework for that class a night plus everything else. I try to start within the first hour I get home which helps a lot. My goal is usually to make sure I’m done before midnight because any less sleep and I’m a grumpy bear haha. Since it’s Spring Break I do get to be a night owl :)

I normally get around 7-8 hours a night. >7 I’m fine, 6-7 I’m tired, <6 I don’t really functio properly. Except yesterday, after 2 hours. I swam for longer than I’d slept the night before, and I had loads of energy.

People at my school claim they do all-nighters or have up to 4 hours of sleep. I can’t tell if they’re lying or not, but they definitely snooze off in class. If that were me, I’d come down with a cold the next day. Some people are just better at it. Maybe if you start to make it a habit (as long as it isn’t unhealthy; plus, teenagers need more sleep!) it won’t be so bad anymore.

been sleeping around 5-6 hours on weekdays for the past 2 months. can’t take it anymore, i just feel so exhausted. I’m going to start cutting down on trying to get everything perfect. if my GPA drops a couple of points… eh, who cares?

If you are still in h.s. and only getting 3-4 hrs of sleep each night, I would guess you are overextending yourself with either sports, extra-curricular, part-time job, etc. If you are staying up all night cramming for a final exam or writing a term paper you never got around to, then you need to do a better job at preparing, perhaps procrastinating less. If you are involved in too many optional activities, perhaps you would be better off focusing on a few that you can more efffectively do and manage your time better.

Do you think high schoolers would perform better if school started, say, 30 minutes later? Why don’t we do this?

HA!
If school started 30 minutes later…I’d still be late and I’d still be tired. :D

I get around 5-6 hours mostly and I’m in the Inhumane Belligerence program known as IB…yup…teachers are freaking out too because of AP exams coming up…it usually ends up working out and if needed, I just sleep for 12 hours on the weekend. you gotta do what you gotta do.

I can function properly on my 5-6 hours a day, but I basically begin to hate everything.
