How do you all survive on so little sleep?

All this talk about naps… It’s been shown that a nap can recharge you mentally if you’re lagging in the middle of the day.

But that doesn’t mean naps are a replacement for REM sleep. If you’re not sleeping enough, you start to suffer from some nasty side-effects. Physically, you won’t have energy and may experience muscle soreness or shakiness. Mentally, you’ll lack focus and sharpness. After you pass those short term effects, you start to deal with other problems like unwanted weight gain increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, depression, and psychosis, as well as a weaker immune system.

Personally, I choose health over a couple extra hours for studying or video games. And if your excuse is that your schedule doesn’t allow for sleep even if you don’t waste time, you need to start dropping ECs or something.

You’ll get more REM sleep by taking 6 or so half hour naps throughout the day than sleeping 8 hours straight, once your body’s gotten used to it. There’s some crazy guy who’s done an enormous amount of research into this kind of thing (a lot of which he tested on himself) but I can’t remember his name right now :(

Usually if I’m too tired I’ll just dump a cup of cold water on my head or something in the morning to wake me up…

How do you guys wake up on a school day? I’d like some advice on how to, as I’m EXTREMELY tired and feel horrible in the morning (Even if I’ve had an adequate amount of sleep). Tried washing face, never tried coffee for a few months (Does it really work)?

If i do it for a month or two, will i get used to it?

I have evolved to the point where I don’t require sleep, only time for meditation.

You are all inferior to me.

okay so im actually quite awful in terms of sleep… i go many weeks getting 2-3 hours a night aha… I usually find that taking a nap after school gives me a fantastic amount of energy in the middle of the day.

I think that you need to organize your time better. There’s no reason why you can’t get at least 5 to 6 hours of sleep. Start assignment earlier, break up large assignments, if you have a study hall then use it.

Make sure that you’re able to say no to things (like clubs, extra groups) f you don’t have time to sleep and such.

When I was in high school I was getting 3 to 5 hours of sleep a night, but looking back at it I now realize that I could have organized my time better and I could have a healthier nights sleep.

Just wait until college, there’s so much free time (not really lol). But you’ll be able to take that much needed nap between classes if need be :D

I agree with BlackRose 101. I still haven’t learned to manage my time extremely well, so I sleep very little (last night was 2:30 to 6am) but at 2 am I realize that the 3 hour long lab (for example) could have been done when I wasted time from 6 to 9 pm… I guess it’s all about how much you sleep the night before and how much time you waste before getting started on work.

Although I also do recognize (and have experienced) times when I feel that I’m extremely efficient but end up sleeping at 2 all the same…

nootropics but you end up “feeling” awake…you still look like **** on the outside after 1-2 days…:(

I sleep 7.5 hours a night.

What do you guys do from when you get home to when you sleep? o.o

^I take naps.
Which often don’t help. I usually end up sleeping 4-5 hours instead of the expected 1 or 2.
I have difficulty waking up to alarms, too. :x

For those with Android phones:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moosa.alarmclock&feature=nav_result

Best alarm clock (unless your phone has a removable battery like mine and you just pull the battery when you’re too lazy to wake up… ahahaha).

Sleep on average 3-4 hours a night, sometimes less. Most of it thanks to reddit, gaming, procrastination. Also usually take 1-2 hour naps after school

I don’t get home until nine because of yearbook, which is really competitive. I go to Starbucks at like 9:30 and buy a latte with an espresso shot, which wears off at around 2 am.

I get home at around 3:30, spend 30 minutes doing my daily internet catch up with a snack, nap for 30 min, homework, TV, computer, sleep.

3-4 hours is insane
I usually sleep ~7 hours

6 or 7 hours is what I usually get on school days, occasionally 5 hours every now and then. It can get hard because I don’t like coffee ;_;… I live by tea lol
I know people who live off 1 or 2 hour of sleep on final exam weeks or weeks when a big project is due. Some even pull all-nighters occasionally. I’ll never understand how they do it… just no

During days where I have Model UN meetings at 7am, I’d have to get up at 6 and I’d get 6 hours of sleep. And then during AP season I got 4-5 hours.

I don’t drink much coffee, only a few days to really wake me up but I can just… do it. The minute I step into the shower, no matter how much sleep I got, I’m good.

Essentially sleep quantity is pointless without sleep quality. A night of 9 hours is rendered useless if you are only in REM sleep for a fraction of that time. You can get the equivilent rest with 4 hours of sleep if you know how to maximize REM sleep time. REM sleep is the most important and deepest phase of sleep.

A hard wakeup process is where you are woken up in REM phase. This gives you that “utterly tired” and “can’t get out of bed feeling”. This is not only very unconfortable, but it can have lasting effects throughout your day.

For a better sleep try to stay on a schedule and avoid hard wake up processes.

Here are some other good tips:

-If you take naps, limit them to approximately 30 minutes. This will keep you more refreshed.
-If you experience the “head bobbing” where you keep almost falling asleep then waking up a short walk might help. Or give you may actually need another hour of sleep.
-Keep to a repetitive sleep cycle.
-Try apps that monitor sleep and don’t wake you up in REM sleep. (try sleep cycle on appstore).
-eat apples instead of caffinated beverages.
-don’t use electronic screens before sleeping. It is harder to fall asleep.

I set about 6 alarms with obnoxious sounds that are scattered around my room so that I have to get up to turn them off. They’re all set for slightly different times in the same 15-minute time frame. I also wake up earlier than I need to and go to Starbucks, get a coffee or a drink or sometimes just a banana and I study there until my school starts (my school is very close to a starbucks.)
