how do you call us/international universities?

isnt it expensive ??

Use Skype. It's a software that's free to download at skype.com

They charge around USD 0.03/minute to some countries.

Actually it's more like 2 cents a minute. I find it odd that some people still use traditional long distance services and pay several times more for long distance. (Especially Americans, who generally have no problem at all with access to technology, and yet are among the world's slowest adopters of Skype.)

EDIT: Canadians too.

if you are from central or south america try telechip internacional.... is a great card... of 10 dollars..but the minute is really cheap... is like to a cellphone in usa you can call with a dollar 40 min... really good...

For just a few calls just get a phone card at a tobac type store in any country.

Phone card in US is not that expensive. My mom brought a phone card which cost like 1-2 cents/min to call China.

Unless of course you live in a country with Skype and all VOIP software banned and inaccessible...

What he said. ^

Skype is not always reliable, the delays, and echos are quite annoying sometimes even when you have a fast connection.

I just call normally. I doubt it costs a lot.. I mean, I only talk to them for like 4 minutes max.. (this is when I'm asking a simple question or 2)

What?!?! VOiP is banned in Dubai? That just seems ridiculous.

Trust me, lots of things in prevalence here seem ridiculous.

Very true. :D

I use Skype in Dubai. I have no problems whatsoever with Skype or even msn/yahoo/google talk voice chats!!!???

Well you certainly aren't doing so legally, are you? :) Etisalat's proxy does block Skype, so unless you've already got the program installed, I doubt you can access it... Google talk sure, along with msn and the like, but skype's definitely blocked.

can't you use tor to get around that? and why is there no opposition to this?

If you managed to bypass the proxy and download the software - you still can't use VOIP. There is another method, it's illegal though.

And of course tor has some sort of visceral hatred for my computer; I can't seem to get it to work :)

Re Shrivats, Lakshya and K_twin,

Yes I downloaded skype before the VOIP ban and in Internet City (where there is no etisalat proxy). Right now, I can use skype at the touch of a button and I have not used any routers, proxy breakers or any ther means whatsoever. Guess I'm just lucky...I'm not complaining. :)

Ah so you're in one of the "no proxy islands", :D That explains it.
