I intend to major in Economics. So do I state this option and take the required classes in Years 3 and 4? Or will I have to do certain classes in Year 1 & 2 as well?

Do they let everyone who wants to do Econ major in it? I'd assume there are restrictions on numbers (especially Econ, which is the most popular major), so they must reject some people form their first-choice majors right? How do they decide this: your GPA, how late you apply, the interest you have demonstrated?

So the general gist is, a ton of people enter in thinking of econ. However you won’t be taking real econ classes (Intermediate Level Economics 200, 201 etc.) until spring quarter at the earliest of your first year. This is a school rule. To take it in Spring, you’ll either need to be enrolled in math 195 (multivariable) or higher, or have gotten straight A’s in all your previous math classes.

As far as I can tell, no first year actually declares their major so thats not a problem, you have to finish the Core anyways and 1st and 2nd year are typically devoted to that.

Some people also choose to take Econ 198 and 199, which are basic micro and macro. They’re both taught by some of our best professors on campus. However, they are not required for the Econ major if you have a solid high school economics background (re: you think your qualified and know basic econ).

I talked to the Econ advisor and most kids finish the 4 intermediate Econ classes 2nd year or early 3rd year, and halfway through them you can start taking more fun “topics” classes.
