Any input on what it takes to get offered a full ride to Bama? My son has a 4.0, 28 ACT, and is currently attending the summer honors program there. He is working to get his act up. Any help with what it takes to get a full ride at University of Alabama??

Check the UA web site for scholarship information. Automatic full tuition scholarships are listed as well as competitive ones that require application. Good luck.

32 on ACT.

full tuition … not full ride.

not sure how to get full ride without being a nat. merit winner

If you are a National Merit Finalist, you get a full ride and like everyone else said you get full tuition for a 32 if you are out of state and full tuition for a 30 if you are in-state.

There are also Academic Elite Scholarships which can be given to those that are in the University Fellows Experience, which you need a 32 and a 3.8 to apply for. These give out a full ride+. Good luck.

Thanks for the information! Actually my son is at UA now participating in the Summer Honors Program. He is really loving it, and hopefully will be driven even harder to do what it takes !

If he should be a National Merit Scholar, he gets to live in the honors housing for four years for free, and those dorms are sweet. Free housing and tuition, along with all the other goodies, make UA a wonderful bargain for the OOS student.

I had this exact same question and so I emailed the local UA recruiter and here’s exactly what she said.

"Each year the guaranteed scholarship requirements change just a bit. Our 2010 requirements have not yet been announced, so I can’t say for sure what they will be, but can tell you what they ended up being for this year. This year, non-engineering students with a 29 ACT and 3.5 GPA received a scholarship that was new this year called the Foundations in Excellence Award that ended up covering 1/2 of out of state tuition each year for four years. 30-31 ACT score and 3.5 GPA non-engineering students received 2/3rds tuition and 32 and 3.5 non-engineering students received full tuition. Students majoring in Engineering with a 30 ACT and 3.5 GPA received full tuition plus 2,500/year for four years.

In order to be considered for the Academic Elite Scholarship, you must be selected as a member of the University Fellows Experience. If you have a 32 ACT and at least a 3.8 GPA and complete the scholarship application prior to December 1st, you will automatically be mailed an application to apply for the University Fellows Program. Students that have at least a 28 ACT can be nominated for the University Fellows Program by a high school counselor or UA faculty member. Once the nomination is received, the student will be mailed an application for the University Fellows Experience."

This is without a national merit scholar, finalist or anything else.

I want to stress DEADLINES! UA’s Scholarship deadline is DECEMBER 1st. My son is a rising junior. We almost missed the deadline for current students which is also December 1st. I suggest you even shorten your deadline calander by no less than 30 days prior to any posted deadline.

Life happens…before you know it, you are stressing to meet the deadline(s).
Keep in mind, your guidance counselor must also meet the deadline(s). Your paperwork is just as important as any other student in your school. Your counselor’s recommendation for any scholarship is important. Your lack of planning should not be someone elses priority! Our school requires the graduating seniors to provide self addressed stamped envelopes or postage for all college mailings. I remember sending paperwork via overnight mail. The costs do add up.

if your son is a rising junior he still has PLENTY of time before his December 1st 2010 deadline

uaprophet,

I was referring to the Dec 1, 2008 deadline for UA’s scholarships that are applied to the 2009-2010 academic year.

My son has only been on campus for one full year but has Junior status thanks to a boatload of AP’s.

Oh ok I’m sorry I misinterpreted it. I was thinking you meant he was a rising junior in high school. I see now you said deadline for current students.

How hard is it to get from the Presidential Scholarship to one that possibly covers more? My daughter’s SAT and GPA are okay, but community service and clubs are pretty much non-existent. I guess I wonder about the whole process, and I assume they are looking for a lot of volunteer/leadership type work. Does that seem to be the case?

Honestly, we never thought she’d be going anywhere but community college, then she did well on the SAT and I found the Alabama site after googling her score. Checked on her gpa, and that seemed to be in line, so now we’re looking all around at colleges. No way will we qualify for financial aid, but we do have other situations that make college totally unaffordable. It’s going to be merit aid or community college for her, and I never thought she’d get merit aid. We could stretch for some of the housing and books, but not very far. She’ll be a senior next year.

Did she win any of the National Merit titles (Scholar, Hispanic Scholar or National Achievement Scholar)? Those give a near fullride, as they cover everything but the $3,000-ish meal plan, and include tuition, room, a laptop, study abroad money, and a $1000 yearly stipend. Also, departmental scholarships exist- in my case, when combined with the National Merit scholarship, everything will be paid.

No merit titles. Her SAT was 300+ points higher than her PSAT.

Can anyone tell us how generous UA is with scholarships that are in addition to the automatic ones? In other words, does UA stack departmental and university scholarships on top of of automatic tuition scholarships? This would be for a student who is not NMF or Fellow.

Do they take SAT scores versus ACT? My D scored well, has GPA and is top 5% in class and is interested in engineering. We’re from CT. Any chance of full?

SAT of 1400 CR+M with GPA of 3.5 (they’ll take weighted) guaranteed tuition for out-of-state under the Presidential Scholarship. Don’t know what it will be this year, but when I called I was told it would probably be the same. They begin accepting applications online July 1st.

“Also, departmental scholarships exist- in my case, when combined with the National Merit scholarship, everything will be paid.”

Kansasdemocrat, out of curiosity, what department are you in?
