Alabama Scholarships!!

Hi! I just recently received my u of Alabama acceptance letter! Can anyone tell me when I should receive scholarship detail?!

Congrats…usually a couple of business days later.

Hi. I have a 30 ACT and have received the 2/3 tuition scholarship. My superscore is a 33, but I just can’t seem to get the 32 composite on one test and I have tried many times. I know they don’t accept superstores, so I filled out the scholarship application. Is it possible that I could receive additional scholarships? I know UA stacks, so I if I could get a little more money to equal almost full tuition, it would be helpful. I have an amazing resume and leadership activities. @mom2collegekids

At most schools, unfortunately, ECs mean little for merit scholarships. Schools give merit for stats because they want their reported middle quartile numbers to increase.

What is your major? Alabama does give more money for eng’g and computer science majors. There are also some other awards.

What do you need your net costs to be?

Federal financial aid?

My DD is a CS major at UA. She also qualified for the 2/3 scholarship, known as a UA Scholar scholarship. The Engineering school also gave her a scholarship that covered the last 1/3 of her tuition and gave her a 2500 stipend as long as she keeps a 3.0 GPA. Bama is VERY generous with scholarship money. We couldn’t be happier with her choice to attend UA. Roll Tide!

The extra engineering (including CS) school scholarship that @Mom24Spadas is referring to is ending after fall 2016 admits; so OOS students in all majors will have to have a ACT 32/SAT equiv along with the required GPA for full academic tuition scholarship. It sounds like engineering may continue the extra $2500/yr ($10,000 total) automatic scholarship for those stats too. I believe today is the deadline for UA automatic scholarship consideration.

I’m pre-med with a focus in health & nutrition possibly, but not sure yet. I don’t need a certain amount of money, so I can go no matter what (even if I got no scholarships at all), but I want to go to medical school, so my goal is to save as much money as possible during undergrad. I’m just trying to get as much money as possible so I will have little debt from med school (assuming I get accepted to med school). I won’t receive any federal aid, but I wasn’t expecting to.

I saw that I qualified for these 2 scholarships:
ALUMNI HONORS SCHOLARSHIP — four-year scholarship awarded to entering freshmen; minimum 28 ACT, 1250 SAT (critical reading and math scores only) and 3.0 GPA; $8,000 per academic year.

ALUMNI LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP — freshman year only awarded to entering freshmen; demonstrated leadership, volunteerism, community activity; minimum 24 ACT, 1090 SAT (critical reading and math scores only) and 3.0 GPA; $6,000 for the freshman year only.

Is anyone familiar with them? Do you have to be majorly in need of aid to be considered, or is it just based on merit?

Also, if I receive local scholarships, will UA stack those, too? I believe I can set off the cost of tuition by at least $3,000 from local scholarships.

@mom2collegekids @SOSConcern @4kidsdad @Mom24Spadas

Yes, if you receive outside awards those will also stack.

^^^ I knew that there were a lot of competitive alumni awards, but I had no idea that there were 15 pages with triple columns, of recipients…about 1200 awarded each year. This is in addition to the 1000+ assured full tuition & 2/3 tuition awards…plus the other assured awards of 1/2 tuition or less.

wow!

@maddie12hirsch I have no idea who or why someone gets competitive Alumni Honors Scholarship, but if you were awarded it, you’d get it stacked on top of the 2/3. However, I suspect those awards are given to students with high stats who miss the auto awards for some reason…like maybe a 30 ACT but a 3.4 GPA…or may have applied after the Dec 15 date. I just don’t know.

Maddie,

Depending on what your major is, be sure to take the correct bio, chem, etc classes. The ones required for Nutrition majors are not premed prereqs. Certainly choose a major that you like and will do well in, but be sure to select the right bio, chem, etc, classes that med schools require. You can see the list on the UA premed advising website.

Yes, I know all the premed required classes and stuff, I just want to major in something else other than a typical science. Thanks for all the help and info! @mom2collegekids

Also realize that you can easily save a couple of thousand for the year just my choosing a traditional dorm over the suites.

I just applied to UA last week and got my acceptance yesterday! I’m super excited, but now I’m worried about the financial aspect. I have a 4.0 GPA UW, I’m in the top 5% of my class, and i am very involved in my community and school. I also have taken honors and APs throughout HS. However, my SAT scores are 1760 (1200 CR M). Will I still be eligible for any good automatic scholarships or will my SAT scores make me completely ineligible? Also when will I be notified about receiving these scholarships and the ones I applied for on the separate scholarship application?
@mom2collegekids

@jshook I know for their merit scholarships there are specific requirement, including ACT/SAT. The letters for these are either in your acceptance letter (that is what my admissions counselor said) or receive a few days later (what actually happened). I would suggest filling out the scholarship application and seeing if you qualify for any on there.

@ettphonehome Thank you! Did you receive any automatic scholarships?

Ya! They give them to you based on grades and test scores @jshook

@jshook According to the above, your 1200 SAT CR+M is too low for the $3500/year Capstone Scholarship. Can you retake the SAT or try the ACT?

@Madison85 unfortunately I can’t the deadline was December. I took the SAT junior year and figured it was fine because it was pretty above Bama’s average. I’m hoping maybe because of class rank and my 4.0/4.0 UW GPA and all my ECs I will receive some good scholarships.

@jshook Are you OOS for Bama? If you need a significant amt of scholarship $$ in order to attend college, it is highly unlikely Bama will be affordable as an OOS student w/o an admission scholarship.
