How do you guys feel about the future of UC's?

With all the budget cuts and reduction in number of slots of applicants as well as lay off of faculties, the future looks pretty grim for the UC's.

I'm a bit nervous because I'm not really an excellent student (heck I'd be happy with a 3.5W or UW). My political science teacher is always bashing on Obama and saying he's going to be spending even more money than Bush and bringing the nation in bigger debts(don't ask me, I don't remember what he said).

For the follow years, 2-3 years later, how do you guys feel will change about the UC, good or bad?

How about CSUs? They’re in a worse boat.

^I was just about to say that…I’m much more worried about the CSUs. Especially since I attend one.

It frustrates me so much that we have all this money to spend on things we don’t need (like paying our government zillions of dollars for doing basically nothing when they should be passing a budget), but we don’t have the money to educate our citizens.

It frustrates me even more that the students are suffering as a result. SSU just instated a 16-unit cap on all undergrad students, and raised tuition by $600. This is in addition to the 10% that it was raised from last year.

In addition, the departments are having to cut classes and lay off our high-quality professors. They’re also unable to take any transfer students because we can’t afford to educate them, cutting back on the amount of tuition money the school receives.

What it comes down to: The UCs don’t need to worry because they’re much more prestigious. The CSUs, however, are often viewed as “just state schools”, so they don’t get as many applicants.

But what will happen if the CSU system goes under? Where do all the students go who can’t afford the UCs and need the affordability of the CSU? An affordability which is rapidly shrinking, by the way.

^^ Yeah, I attend a CSU as well. And one of my professors that I had just this past Spring semester lost his job. Very unfortunate.

They’re cutting back on classes, teachers, everything.

They haven’t put any limits on the amount of units you can take here, but my school will not be admitting any applicants for Spring 2010 because of the whole budget fiasco and stuff.
