state budget cuts

How are the california state budget cuts going to affect us next year? I know they are raising tuition, but are they cutting classes too?

I work at UCB (and going back to school in hopes to transfer there–kinda weird, I know). There have been no final determinations, but things that are on the table include more tuition raises, cuts to student resources, cuts to some classes, and increase in class sizes. In addition, the state is thinking about cutting or doing away with Cal Grants. While it is unlikely the voters will approve this, it is something to pay attention to. Where I work, in the Physics Department, we are having to cut back on some of our classes, including required classes. This has put a huge strain on students who are required to take the classes, but cannot get into them.

Thanks for the reply! I am seriously afraid of not being able to get into my required classes next fall since I would be an econ major at berkeley. This economy sucksssssssssss

1st and foremost, the governor kept the aid flowing through cal grants to UC students. Only about 700 grants will be cut. Still a large amount but very minimal considering that more than half receive the grant. Of course, the schools will be tightening their belts and probably cutting some of the youngest professors and raising tuition for the following year as well as this year.

Whatever the government doesn’t provide in grants, the school(UCLA/Berk) will provide through their own endowment system. These UCs are very very generous.

sirena…you’re welcome
