The future of the University of California

What big changes do you guys see for the University of CA. Anything can be posted. Difference in rankings? Differences in preference? Differences in selectivity / admit rate for certain campuses? Anything you guys think will happen in the UC system go ahead and post it. This is one of the care free threads on CC. Anway,

I think that as more and more CA students qualify for college, that the UC system will drastically cut its admit rate and more and more kids will look towards the CSU system. In a few years, getting into ANY UC will be an accomplishment, rather than just the flagships (LA and Cal).

When Merced is built, I think that the UC system will try to make that its flagship. With everything being new, I don’t think UC will let it become the next Riverside.

I HOPE that Davis becomes big in D1 sports.

That’s all I got.

I think Merced is in the wrong area for it to become one of the large UC's since a lot of the applicants to the UC's are asian and asians tend to like the cities, It would be cool if Merced was kept small instead of becoming another big inpersonal university.

bjwbell.... perhaps you haven't heard of UC davis :P?

I think Davis and Santa Barbara are my favorite UC's even though they're lower ranked than cal and ucla. CSU will definetely become more popular

i think the UC's will be A LOT more asian heavy (not like they already aren't though), since affirmative action was gotten rid of and now theyre trying to cut down any suspicious backdoor usages of race in admissions.

if budget continues to suck, i think boalt might seriously become a private law school, and it might have a good chance to rise back as a top 10 law school. same with anderson... privatization seems like an option. both seem to have been vague proposals recently as possible solutions if the budget has a bleak future

UCSD has a chance to become the top UC if it dominates all the stem cell research, as all the big biotech companies will base themselves in SD (theres already a lot of them there) and a huge brain drain of the nation's top bio professors will head to UCSD. but that depends on how berkeley, stanford, ucla, and caltech fight for stem cell research funds away from UCSD.

i doubt UC Merced will be a major UC. it could... but i dont think as many good students would want to go there as they would want. besides riverside, its the only other UC located inland and its not located in a major city (for internships, job placement, entertainment opportunities, etc). plus like bjwbell mentioned, asians (which make up a significant portion of the UC population) tend to stick near cities (where there are higher concentrations of asians).

UCSB will become more selective and be on the rise

UCD is located inland and not in a major city, UCB is located inland and not in a major city.

UCB is not really inland, infact if you go down University Ave it leads right to the bay. You can make it to San Francisco in about 15-20 minutes. I consider Berkeley area an major city. There's alot of stuff to do in the Bay Area.

UCR is near Los Angeles, I think of UCR being in a major city.

I think in time UCSD is going to be up with UCB and UCLA. I think first it needs to develop in the humanities though before it can be considered as good as cal and ucla

Are you serious VTBoy?? UCR a major city??? What are you smoking?

UCSD is definately becoming more and more competetive

Yes, but it is very much a science school, while cal and ucla shine across the board.

also, ucsd is only division 2 and no football team = less school spirit

it's also a large communter school

Yeah, that's why I'm thinking that Davis is going to come up pretty soon. New stadium, college town, about to go D-1 in sports, the only other UC w/ a football team besides the flagships...i see big things for Davis.

A lot of my mom's friends have kids that chose UCSD over UCLA and Berkeley, and are now professors at Hopkins and went to med school...etc all that jazz.
Biotechnology companies are blanketing the SD area.

I can see UCSD rolling over UCLA in a few years (Cal might take a little longer to overtake), they just need a stronger humanities program... as of now their humanities programs are pretty weak, a major factor that is hindering their developement.

Merced? nah... they got new toilets and new doorknobs, thats about it.

SB might be on the rise, especially in their graduate division. But as for now, it's pretty much still U of Casual Beer and Sex in their undergraduate division.

the rest are well... eh? don't see them moving any time soon.

ucsb has a lot of very strong programs. physics is stellar. engineering programs are pretty good. selectivity is increasing. not to mention, college of creative studies is pretty awesome and several kids who got accepted to higher uc's picked ucsb for ccs because of the highly individualized attention they will get and more research opportunities (there are only 350 undergrads on ccs)

ucsd needs a lot of work, it has no school spirit at all. good academics but social atmosphere and activity needs to rise before it can be ucla calibre

UC Davis IS about to explode in the UC system...
* Largest campus
* Third largest enrollment
* One of only 3 UCs w/ football team (Cal/ UCLA)
* Excellent professors
* Nice b

Sorry...
* Nice balance of academic + social scene = college experience
* Brand new Mondavi Center and ARC
* Who can resist the cows? (Living in dorms and it really doesn't smell like it at all)
* Team spirit
* If you're not sure where you want to go, come check out Picnic Day @ UCD
