How do you guys read faster? (WPM-wise)

I can read at about 250 WPM, but this is a bit slow for my liking. However, if I try to quickly scan my eyes across lines of text, I don't pick up as much information - I just can't comprehend and retain it all if I go that quickly. How do you guys do it? I'd like to be able to read at least 450-500 WPM and still have the same comprehension rate for my 250 WPM speed.

Isn’t WPM used for typing?

since you guys are discussing this; is anyone here proficient at photo/speed reading? Are those just scams?

@Grisam: It can also be used for reading.

I thought the ad on tv was funny where they move their finger really fast and read like one page every second. Their hand must get tired moving so fast. I bet its a scam, but there are people (usually girls) who can read fast probably cause they read alot of books.

Read in chunks, not word by word.

To OP: [Amazon.com: Breakthrough Rapid Reading (9780735200197): Peter Kump: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Breakthrough-Rapid-Reading-Peter-Kump/dp/073520019X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286038129&sr=8-1)

I read ridiculously fast, and I think I’ve gained this skill by just reading a lot throughout my life. The more I want to read, the less time I have to devote to one book, so it just became ingrained in my head to process words a lot faster. I don’t know how many WPM I can actually read, but this summer I read over 40 books (and still had some vestiges of a life).

when you move to new places a bunch of times throughout your life, you tend to become reliant on books to keep you company. I love reading and books are my life, so I can read about 500 words per minute. But pace don’t really matters as you should just stick to making sure you understand what you’re reading anyway.

I seriously want to give you a big hug you for posting. It’s so difficult to get good recommendations on good books in certain subjects. Judging from the reviews on Amazon, this sounds awesome. I was going to buy earplugs from Amazon today, and this is a good excuse to get free shipping!

@franticpizza: I think I might buy that book. Thank you! Out of curiosity, do you have it and if so does it work for you?

I agree with Sandwhich Girl. Read in chunks. Read in phrases.

And reading more helps…

I honestly think the best way to go about getting better is simply just reading as much as possible, but part of what slows me down just my focus. You can get better at focusing by reading things you might now otherwise be interested in. Try not to let your mind wander!

Bump. I want some more ideas!

Yeah! I got the book over the summer and it’s really helping me out with my reading assignments.
