at my school we have to have our id card swiped to get into the actual dorm and then keys to unlock our room so I got a little id holder wallet type thing that's connected to a key ring. It has a clear pocket on the outside where i keep my id and pockets inside for change, cash, credit cards etc. I just carry that around with me, that way I always have everything I need... well minus my cell phone and chapstick

correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought the main part of the OPs question was not remembering the keys when u go out to class or something, but remembering the keys like when you get up in the morning and are just going down the hall to brush your teeth and take a shower.

and so an idea i just thought of would be to get one of those elastic wrist things like they have at waterparks for the locker keys, you could wear that in the shower.

I don't think you need to lock the door when you go to take a shower.

... but make sure your roommate doesn't leave and lock it if you don't have a key.

I always had my keys, but this problem is solved if you don't like your door also. We never locked ours. Depends on the campus culture if that would be a good decision to make though.

the elastic wrist things are good. I also have one of those on my keys.

well there's no guarantee that your roommate has the same schedule as you, you could be doing your monring routine after your roommate has gone to class.

In regard to the OP question:

At school, since we never locked our doors, I never had to bring my keys to the bathroom.

But at the dorm I stayed at this summer, since the doors autmoatically locked, I had to picture myself standing in the hall wrapped in a bathrobe, naked underneath... that was NOT the scene I wanted the public safety to be part of! So I always make a mental picture of that and make sure that I put my key in my bathroom tote.

Worked pretty well.

We have the same auto-locking doors, and they're a royal pain. Especially when the older dorm I had as a freshman didn't have them... the "training period" that was early sophomore year involved many many lockout fees.

Most people at Princeton keep them from locking by placing flat magnets (the business-card advertising style) across the lock housing. Some use tape, but that's less easily removed. The only downside is that "disabling the locks" will net you a fine if it's caught by a fire inspector. Who knows why. It's ridiculous.

I keep my ID card on the same keychain as my key, and have installed a cuphook to hang it next to my door so I don't forget it. When I'm out, it stays in my coat pocket... lanyards are dorky. Still use a lanyard for my bike key, but that's so I don't have to take off the gloves in the winter.

If you're bringing a car, would you keep that on the same keychain? I'm thinking not because I won't use my car everyday and my keyless entry shouldn't be getting banged around and wet... I've already replaced it twice beceause I've smashed it/dropped it in water and that gets really expensive.

...why do you drop your keys into water?
