Does anyone know if it's okay to make a copy of my roommate's dorm keys if I lost mine?

You can try, though I believe the keys may say "Duplication Prohibited." It may come down to how scrupulous the hardware store is. Even if you do make a copy, housing will notice at the end of the year because each original key is numbered and your duplicate key will not be.

Either way, it looks like you may be stuck paying the (rather steep) lost key charge.

How steep is the charge, do you know? sigh.

It's only the 2nd week of classes...

My roommate lost his keys the day he moved out last year. I think he said it was $200. Don't quote me on that.

it may depend on the building, but 200 sounds about right for a room key...

i think i remember them saying @ orientation (so that was in new) that its $100 per key... which would be $100 for the room key and $100 for the building/bathroom key...

Thanks all, but guess what? Someone (who I have to go and thank personally) gave my keys to my RA, who then gave them back to me! Yay... no steep fines!

you know to save yourself from that trouble next time, make a copy of it right now, and then carry that around with you instead. Keep the original safe in a drawer or something.

(I know this is a crazy "Mom idea" but I'll tell you anyway.)

I bought a tiny little cat collar tag (you can make them at Petco) with just my son's cell # on it. If his keys get lost, hopefully, someone will find them and call him.

I went over to one of my friend's room today, and apparently, most buildings still use a physical key; Birnkrant uses the USCard to get into the rooms!

Anyways, apparently there's a "sketchy keymaker" across the street somewhere that makes copies of keys no-questions-asked for $10-$20. Ask around.

I hate how Birnkrant got all these awesome amenities once I moved out.

you should see arts & humanities ^.^
