How do you like University of Washington (pre-meds especially), and what are the pros and cons?

Hey everyone! It seems like I will be attending UW this coming fall! I just wanted to know all of your opinions on UW- everything from student life and feel to academics.

I’m asking because while I know the academics are research for students are amazing (as well as the campus), I have read several concerning comments about the struggles pre-med students encounter there. Some such comments have been lack of pre-health advising, professors more focused on research, overly competitive students (to the point of students stealing work from each other!) and an academic rigor that’s overwhelming for many students. These comments scare me, and I want to know if this really is the best choice for pre-meds. Can anyone verify?

And yes, please all tell of your personal experiences there, as well as what you like most and dislike

Thanks so much!

I’d love to hear what you guys have to say as well!

Like some of the other large public flagship universities, UW is very competitive, especially for pre-med, pre-health professions or any professional schools like computer science, engineering, business, etc. I attended a parent/student orientation over a year ago and the admission officer was addressing the parents. He said that everyone who was admitted to UW had to be an A students to get in. Not everyone admitted to UW can be doctors. Therefore, UW is on a steep bell curve to “weed” out students. That itself indicates that the school is very competitive. You also might want to ask current UW students what the competition is like at UW.

UW is amazing for medicine if you get into the program, but please have a backup plan or a backup school.
