I get home late, have tons of homework, sports, volunteering, and of course the SATs now. I know a lot of you guys go through the same, but how do you manage it? School started and I haven't even been able to touch my SAT books...I've only got a month left too. How do you manage it? What's your schedule like? Any advice? Thanks!

Bump…

Um it is sort of hard/you have to find a balance. You asked about schedule so here is mine (so that you can understand my crazy life), note I am in the process of joining math club (it will be new to my school) which will add an extra thing to my week…

Monday: Varies by week, once a month I have a board meeting for a library board and once a month I have a board meeting for a golf program I am in. The other weeks I tend to be helping with school events or some other random thing. I usually get home around 7:00.
Tuesday: NAHS, not a very busy day for me, I get home by 5:00, though I think this is when math club will be (which I will go to from NAHS, meaning it will be a much longer day).
Wednesday: Take a bus to the library study for like an hour, get some food and then take another bus to my next class. I then have a Hebrew class which I take for language credits and some Judaic studies. I get home around 9:00.
Thursday: Go to the golf course right after school where I coach, I get home between 8:00 and 8:30.
Friday: Nothing!
Saturday: Varies substantially by week, some weeks I do college visits, others I help at school auditions (I go to a magnet school) and similar events, others I help with fundraisers for the places I volunteer, I usually have around 5-6 hours of stuff to do on Saturday.
Sunday: More Hebrew classes and volunteering, occasionally other stuff, usually 4-5 hours of stuff.

So now that you have read my schedule you understand where I am coming from. Homework wise I get 3-4 hours a night on average (this is what I get for taking all honors and APs) and then I am involved in two yearbooks and some other stuff that produces up to an extra hour of work a night. I am also self studying for an AP, have leadership positions in every EC I am in and helping my teacher from last year plan a trip to Washington DC for almost 200 students.

I have found that the key is time management and taking advantage of time even when you only have five minutes. I carry ACT flashcards with me so that if I have a minute or two I study them. I do my school readings on the bus and use days where we have subs to study (as opposed to my classmates who talk). Managing is hard to do, but you get used to it. You have to be OK with the idea that you will get less then three hours of sleep at least once a month, will probably do homework when you are half asleep and fail at least a few tests each year because you simply never had time to study. You have to prioritize, do well on not a lot of sleep and make every minute count.

My day currently:
School
Varsity volleyball (games can last until 10 but usually end at 7 practice ends at 6:30)
Dinner in the car
Play Practice/voice lessons/musical theater 7-10:00pm
School Work

My day in November
School
Club meetings (student council, Book club, history club, green team…etc)
Musical rehearsal 3:45-5:30
Violin Lesson: 6-6:30
Travel Volleyball 7:00-9:00
Homework.

It varies on the day really. I just go with it, Ill get things done eventually. I never fail to. And if I get tired or overwhelmed, I just watch ivy dreams, or think about my speech for when I’m the Val.

Right now, I have an easy schedule, and should put more effort into my studies because I only have practice for Quiz Bowl on Tuesdays, and sometimes Thursdays…in spring, track is going to be rough because practice doesn
t get out until 6, I don
t get home until 7:00-7:15, except on Wednesday, when I get home at like 9:00…but I don
t have to deal with SATs (Sophomore here :D)…after seeing ArtsyGirl and AlexHarper
s schedules…I think I`ll be able to study and do homework a lot easier!

Give up sleep. Give. It. Up.

No. Sleep is heaven. Keep it.

I don’t really know how I do it, to be honest.

Basically I wake up at 6, most days I have drill from 6:30 to 7:30, which is definitely a wake-up call. If not, I intentionally leave a homework assignment to do from 7 to class time to get my head in the game. But I spend a little bit of time in the morning socializing, it always sets my day off to a good start. Then, class from 7:50 to 10:20, ten minute break which involves me running around like a chicken with my head cut off to print out my government homework. More class, 20 minute lunch/chat with friends, out of school at 2:30. Or maybe 1 if it’s an X-Block day. Then I either go to work until 5:30/7:30, or putz around at school for a bit (chatting with teachers, other errands) then go home and do all the mounds of homework I have and housework, even catch an hour or two of primetime TV. But either way, i’m always in bed and sound asleep by 10:30-11.

It’s stressful, but can be done. But I do like 10% of the activities most people here do, but I want to put at least 100% in everything I do. So I do. That part is the most stressful part of all.

Time. Management.

If you don’t have sports in your schedule, the best way to get more sleep is to take a nap right after school. This probably works better for night owls like myself, of course. I always find I am absolutely drained after school (due to workload and health issues that make me easily tired) so I’ll nap until 6 or 7 in the evening and then do my homework and studying. Obviously, this doesn’t always happen depending on my schedule. It does help me, though, especially if you have lots of stuff to do and are going to be up late anyway.

Other than that, you just have to budget time for important things. I try to pull up the Common App if I notice I’m procrastinating, which helps complete little bits of it at a time. I have trouble getting to SAT prep as well, but it’s really all about telling yourself to find time for it.

wow i literally do nothing after school other than facebook and maybe an hour or two of homework (while on facebook) sad life

Haha doing IB here:TONS of hw. Upward of 1-1.5 hours a day(very rare) an on average 4-6. My schedule:
Monday-Thursday: band practice till 5(not bad)
Friday: Football game till 11-2am sometimes
I’m starting CAS Hours soon and am thinking of getting in UIL soon. In NHS and I have to study for SAT and PSAT. And for CAS I have to do Creativity hours which is to make State on my instrument(French Horn) so that means about 1/2 hour to an hour of practice everyday. Time management is key!!! But the past two days I stayed up till 12 but for other reasons, I had about 8-10 assignments due in two days each about 1-4 hours long each. No breaks or tv till you finish hw for about 30 minutes(usually its late at night) or go to sleep. Love sleep and coffee, they become your best friends.
and take 5-15 minute breaks between every assignment, listening to music helps for me or doing nothing. UNLESS it’s crunch time!! Remember, “You can do it!” ~lol
