How do you pay your tuition with a F-1 visa?

How did you guys manage to pay your tuition with a F-1 visa?
I believe that you are not allowed to work or get financial aid? I’m worried.

I went to elementary (starting from 4th grade), middle, and am currently in high school right now with F-2 visa.
I might have to apply for F-1 visa if I don’t get my green card.
Are there any special programs that will help me pay for my tuition if I go to a university in a state where I live?

When do I apply for F-1 visa? Is it before I apply to colleges or when I turn 18?
And also, do I still have to take a TOEFL?

Thank You.

Some colleges and universities have financial aid and scholarships for international students. Some public colleges and universities don’t charge out of state fees if the international student has been living in that state for a certain number of years and graduated from high school in that state. So you need to do some investigation. Your own guidance counselor should be able to help you find out some of those answers.

Every college and university sets its own policy about the TOEFL. You need to ask each if them separately. It is not likely that you would be required to take it considering how long you have been in the US. But don’t be surprised if you are.

You can have certain kinds of jobs with an F1, but you won’t make much money. Just enough for books and pizza.

Not sure which university you will be applying to. For UC and CSU, as long as you are graduating from a US hihg school. You don’t need TOFEL.

If you have high stats, then look at schools that give merit scholarships irrespective of citizenship/residency status.

Cold, hard, cash.
