How do you score the PFT?

I have heard that a cadet has to score at least 300 out of 500 on the PFT to avoid “recondo.” Can you tell me how to score the five areas?

Each area is worth 100 points, 5 total areas of grading. I don't know the exact formula, but certain values for each event gets you a certain amount of points, and so it follows that the closer you get to maxing the closer you get to 100.

I think the max scores for each events are as follows:

pull-ups: 21
long jump: ? someone else should know
sit ups: 95
push ups: 72
600m run: 1:35

Last year part of the literature sent to appointees gave the exact scoring tables for the PFT. Forgive me for not knowing where I filed it, but someone on this forum probably has it.

From this year's Appointee booklet, here are the minimum's
that are worth 25 points per event
Pull Up- 7 = 25
Long Jump 7" = 25
Sit up's 58 = 25
Push-Up's 35 = 25
600 yard run 2:03 = 25

So what happens if they max out on some things, hit the minimum on others, and don't quite make the minimum on one? Do they fail or does the maxing out give them enough points to pass?

If they max out they get 100 points
Caleb was 1 second off maxing on the run
and got 90 points on the first PFT before
DDO and he maxed out on push-up and sit-ups
He said he would have broken 400 if he had maxed
on the run and he got 391
He had about 9 pull-up
and not sure on the long jump, if that will help

you can fail one area and still be okay. so if a guy only does 6 pull-ups, he can still pass the PFT. the only thing is that's only around 20 points or so, and you need a 250 overall to pass. as stated before, minimum scores get 25 points, and max get 100. in between there is just a chart which shows the points, which go down from 100 as you move away from the minimum.

max jump is 8'3". and note, the max and mins stated are for the guys. girls have different everything else i believe except for sit-ups

What I am understanding is that minimum scores get 25 points, maximum scores get 100 points, and scores in between get points in between. That explains to me how someone can get the minimum score in all areas and not pass. Do you have a link to the chart?

They really is no chart available to us. The only ones we know are minimums (25 points), averages (50 pts), and maxes (100 pts). The scores for the CFA to enter are lower in several areas like pull-ups and push-ups than they are for the PFT.

PS I've seen caleb 3 or 4 times in the last two days. He is very smiley and looks well. lol. He also has a guy in his flight that I graduated high school with.

Max long jump is actually 8'8"

Hornetguy-thanks for the personal and upfront update on Caleb-It's
always nice to hear and then I can tell his the rest of the pack
(his brother and 2 sisters & dad) that he is good. He has been very
upbeat in his letters.

my bad on the jump. 8'3" is what i had on my practice that didn't count, so i always have that on the brain.

I hope that if my S gets in, some nice person like hornetguy will report back to me that my S is happy, not sick, hurt or hungry. That was really a kind thing to do, hornetguy. No wonder you kids at USAFA are the best of the best.

:) I enjoy helping out peeps. I love teaching and mentoring, its very rewarding.

It shows and it has been our honor to know you
2010ers and you've taken good care of my boy and
me( representing all members of the homefront )- so thanks

This mom is in complete agreement - you 2010s are great! We've enjoyed meeting some of you and hope to meet the rest of you soon. You sure helped us prepare for this ride and will help in days to come, I know.

BTW - Hornet someone in 24 loaned son a phone, we had a quick call, it was great! See you at Acceptance!

Good to hear, its been difficult to get around to anyone else, they are always gone!

I must say, the basics in my squad crack me up. They are characters! I've heard great things about them from my AOC and their cadre, so I'm looking forward to working with them and helping out.

Hornetguy - I've got a couple of quick questions for you. About how many cadets make the "500 club"? (I think that's what it is called) And does that only involve the PFT scores or also AFT? DS has set that as a goal. His first PFT score was 411 and he said a little higher on the second one. He's hoping to score even better on the one administered the week after PW. Thanks a bunch. And I, too, agree with the previous posts thanking you (and the rest of the 2010ers) for all of your help and advice throughout the year.

Not many make the 500 club. Maybe one a squad will. That includes either the PFT or the AFT.

My AOC has actually started a 1000s club program in our squadron. He's an iron man guy, so HIS goal is to get 500 on both PFT and AFT by the end of the year and he will help anyone that wants to train with him. Amazing guy really.

Well, I finally heard from my cadet. He did pass the PFT, though not with a high score BUT he did it with a major blood infection from blisters, his leg swollen and red from his foot to his groin, and the day before he went into the hospital. / : Thanks for all the help with the numbers. I am just glad he is in the hospital where someone is taking care of him.
