How does auto admit work for high schools that don't rank and unranked students?

I am curious to know how top 7% is decided if you are an unranked student or a high school doesn’t rank. I won’t have a rank because I am transferring to a new school in 12th grade. But I know that if they did rank me I would be number 3/112.

Will you have an end of year Junior transcript from your current school with a rank?

If you are not ranked, you are not eligible auto admit at UT. UT will assign you a percentile rank for purposes of their calculation of the academic index, but even if that rank is top 7 percent you won’t be an auto admit.

“In recent years, more than half (often a good deal more) of our entering freshmen were admitted based on rank alone. That means that any student who applies without a reported rank (even those at the top of their graduating class) will compete for spaces that remain after all eligible students have been automatically admitted.”

@gettingschooled I will get a junior year transcript in like June. But I don’t know if UT will accept it because by the time I apply, I would already be withdrawn from the previous school. I might tell my new GC to update my transcript with my old school rank.

If you apply in August, you use your end of junior year transcript and rank. You can get a hard copy (make sure it is official) and upload it into the system once you get your My status account (within a day or so of doing ApplyTexas). Auto admit notices go out in mid September. Majors come later. Otherwise you will go through holistic review which is not the end of the world.

Alright thanks! Also UT can just ask my old school for another transcript right??

UT probably won’t ask for it. You’ll need to send it

I have another question. Am I allowed to use my old school’s rank on my 12th grade transcript? Would UT consider that rank? Or would they omit it because its from a different school?

I will ask my 12th grade GC to write a note stating that the rank is from my junior year school.

When are you moving? Are you staying in your current school through the end of the year? If so, you can apply in August and use your junior year rank and transcript.

People use one of two transcripts when they apply 1) end of junior year through June or 2) end of coursework completed through August.

This year transcripts and ranks were due December 1 before the first semester of 12th grade was completed.

Unless you are leaving your current school before the end of this school year, you will use your June rank and transcript to apply.

Wait. In your current school you are ranked 81/655 according to your November post. Where are you getting 3/112? Are you saying if the new school ranked you, you’d be 3/112? If so, no one is going to read a note from one school’s GC saying what they think a kid would be ranked at another school.

The new school is not going to rank you to prevent someone from coming in last minute and gaming the rank. This was a ploy people used to game the system in the early days of top 10 percent and most schools have put a stop to it by not ranking students who were not in the school for long enough.

What you might want to ask is whether the school will rank you at the end of 12th grade. You could apply with that rank for Spring admission or the following Fall as long as you don’t enroll elsewhere.

Alright I am going to explain everything in detail. I am moving after junior year.

11th grader right now, 81/655 in my current school. I am changing schools in senior year due to personal reasons. The new schools GC said that they would not rank me because I am transferring in 12th grade (I already knew they wouldn’t rank me. The 3/112 is what I would have been if the school ranked me). She said that my rank would be “omitted”.

Instead of my rank on the transcript saying “omitted”, I am going to ask my new counselor if she can put my 11th grade rank on the transcript. If she does, I’m going to ask her to write a note on the transcript for the UT adcoms. The note will be something like, “81/655 rank from his 11th grade school”.

I have said this twice so I am not sure a way to say this to make you understand.

Early June finish 11th grade
Late June Get transcript and rank from old school
August 1 fill out application and have old school send transcript and rank to UT; you can also upload your paper copy
August 20 Start new school

Why won’t that work?

Since you are not auto admit, you might want to consider letting the new school send a transcript with no rank. You may fair better with a rank that UT assigns you than your actual rank. There is no way to tell though.

Ohhhh I understand now!!! I’m sorry. Thanks for the information!

Just request your official transcript from you old school mid June, when they should be ready. It will have your rank at the end of your Jr. Year. Our district allows you to do it online and pick it up from the district admin office. Then you can send it August 1 and apply anytime Aug. 1 or after. My son sent his transcripts long before he actually applied. Mailed them Aug 1 and applied Oct. They will link it all up. Only took a short time for it to show up on his status.

Then at the end of your Sr year, you will request transcripts again. This time, the school will send them to the university you tell them to. This shows the university that you did indeed finish high school and with the courses you said you were taking when you applied.

Well, I see you both commented and got it straitened out while I was typing.

@Thelma2 Thanks for your reply! So at the end of senior year, I ask my old school or my new school to send my transcript to the university?

@GanTheMan At the end of your senior year, you will need to request a transcript from your new school to send a transcript to the university that you will be attending.

@Thelma2 Alright! Thank you once again!
