How does EA/RD timeframe work?

I was planning on applying to my first-choice college Early Action before November 1st (the deadline). However, I won't be able to get my application together and polished until quite late into the end of October and may only submit my application perhaps a week before the deadline.

I know my chances wouldn't be affected per se but would I be better off submitting on November 2nd as a regular decision applicant, buying myself some more time to finish up my essays and being viewed as part of the first, fresh batch of RD applicants, rather than as the late-comers to the Early Action option?

How does the timeframe work? What would happen if you applying RD, before the EA deadline? Would they just put off looking at your application until all the EA ones had been done?

Thanks in advance for your help!

It can’t possibly take that long to write your essays. Apply EA unless you’re counting on your first-semester senior year grades to add something significant to your application (which they won’t if they’re basically consistent with your previous grades).

Really depends on the school. As I understand it, lots of schools consider applications submitted before the EA deadline to be EA applications.
