Hey guys so just a couple questions. Im applying early action to a couple schools and was wondering first when should I submit the common app (how early) if the deadline is November 1st. And lets say I get differed by the colleges I apply too (hopefully won't happen) will I have a chance to update my application with like new activities or awards or even change something in my essay before they look at my app again for regular decision? Thanks.

And Also how do I know when my teachers have uploaded their letters of rec?

Bump

Submit it any time you want, so long as you’re done with it. You’ll know the recommendations are in because instead if saying “not started” or “started”, it will say submitted. I don’t know about updating it for RD, but I hope this helps!

You should submit your app about 2 days before Nov 1st or earlier if you can. I don’t think you can update it for RD but you should have a good chance of getting accepted if you apply EA since there’s more space and if you get deferred to RD you might get accepted because they could use your application to fill in a space.

If deferred from EA/ED, you can submit an “update” – don’t do more than one. Send it strategically and ONLY if you have something VERY significant to add. You can’t send essays however.

And what @purple205 is saying here is a mystery

@T26E4 what?

Your sentence’s logic doesn’t flow. EA applicants don’t get an edge because they’ve not yet filled any spots. EA programs are used by schools to entice students, to get them in in order to woo them for final matriculation – and also for the admissions office to spread the workload.

If one gets deferred to RD
– isn’t this self-evident?

If you are deferred, you can update them by sending an email to admissions with additional information and ask them to consider it with your application. You don’t want to bug them with a lot of emails (one or two), and you really only want to give them substantial information. You can even do this with an RD application after the app has gone in. For example, in the first week of February senior year, my D2 had a top 5 in the state tournament for her individual sport and also a high finish in a large academic competition. She put those two items in an email to admissions at each of her schools and asked them to please consider the info along with the rest of her application. She got in everyplace she applied… so it sure didn’t hurt her, and may have helped.

Also don’t wait until the last day or two to submit your EA app (or any app) if you can help it. The Common App system has been known to go down on heavy load days, so beat the rush by shooting for 2-3 days before the deadline on any apps. But it is okay to put it in any time ahead of the deadline.
