I'm treasurer of NHS. Is this a very admirable title, or is it only really legit if you're like president or something? Thanks!

Its respectable to be an NHS officer, but remember, theres 4-5 of them in every school in the country with NHS, so its not a super standout thing.

btw, I’m secretary of NHS at my school.

Depends on the college you apply to, but I think you mean to use this for top tier schools.
Um, no, NHS Prez, VP, Sec/Treasurer doesn’t make you “special special”. Many applicants in the pool will have this distinction.

Many applicants to top schools will have state or national NHS positions. Many more will have one of the five or so school NHS positions. Which one stands out more?

How does one even obtain a state/national NHS position?

The title in itself is not impressive. Even NHS presidency in itself is not impressive. If you use your position to start a new program/event or take some other initiative, then it becomes impressive.

No big deal.

It looks the same if you were treasurer of any other club in your school. Did you do something progressive as treasurer or did you just sorta sit around holding a meaningless title?

Sorry, but exactly does a high school club treasurer actually do? Control the key to the little box where you pay for the bake-sale treats?

^ Lorem, I just made the connection between your username and placeholder text!

^ I used to work in graphic design and electronic prepress.

Yep, I was looking at a blank page recently for next year’s yearbook and saw that exact text!

The question about impressive ECs comes up regularly on the forum. There is a thread with comments by Northstarmom, a Ivy alum interviewer, about what constitutes impressive ECs from the point of view of the most selective colleges. The post is at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/210497-those-ecs-weak-so-what-s-good.html

2 very interesting articles about ECs that stand out and how to get them (same author, different examples) are at [How to Be Impressive](The Art of Activity Innovation: How to Be Impressive Without an Impressive Amount of Work - Cal Newport) and [Save This Grind?](Case Study: How Could We Save This Ridiculously Overloaded Grind? - Cal Newport) While I don’t agree with everything in them, take a look at these 2 articles and I think you’ll get some original ideas.

I am still honestly wondering what exactly a high school club treasurer does? There can’t much money involved and most things that are approved would be paid for by someone else in the administration. Is the treasurer the one who begs for funds to put on an event?

It sounds pretty much like a bogus title granted to the third person who joins that club, once the president and VP titles are taken.

how does one even become NHS president before you submit your applications to schools.

We haven’t even found out yet about NHS, i mean we turned in our applications for that and if we find out at the end of junior year, when are presidential elections.

^^ Lorem, I think I basically just get on everyone’s cases if they haven’t yet turned in their membership fees.
I mean, I wouldn’t mind doing any actual financial planning/managing, but–like you said–it’s not like there’s a great need for it. Oh, and there’s a “secretary” too. I basically have the spot as treasurer locked in place, but I’m wondering if I should go big and run instead for president?

Go for president, Liv. NU and the Ivies want the very top people, not the mid-level ones!

But what if I don’t win?
I don’t know who else is running.

Most organizations with school chapters have larger umbrellas that operate on the state and national level. Your school might not be connected with those larger organizations (mine isn’t either, so I feel your pain), so you may have to do some Internet digging to figure out a way to get a position

Start your own organization! :)
