I have 12 credits that I need to graduate in time (I’m a freshman, with CS intent in L&S). These courses are 61A, and Math 1A, along with a 4 credit breadth course.
Should I sign up for these 3 courses during phase 1, and then try to sign up for Data 8 during phase 2? This is another course I’m interested in, but if the overall workload is too much, I’ll drop Data 8.
Math 1A for sure to get the discussion section times you want.
If CS61A is ran like the old times, then the lab sessions are optional and therefore not too important to pick a specific time. I’m not sure about Data 8’s lab session policy, but you can check.
I would actually enroll in multiple breadth courses of your interest - I’m not sure if we’re going with 13.5-unit Phase I cap or reverted to 10.5-unit cap, but either way, if the breadth courses are worth 3 units, then it’s a chance to enroll in 2~3 and Math 1A and be right under the limit.
I need to get those first three courses, 61A, Math 1A, and my Breadth course. Data 8 is a course I can take next year or over the summer. @anxiousenior1
So should I only add the first three courses to my cart? Or should I add all 4?
I’d say do CS61A Phase 2. I heard everyone gets in and it never fills up.
Add all 4 to your shopping cart. Import. Prepare for some of your discussion sections to fill up so watch it for the hour before your slot and come up with backup plans.
For lower division CS classes you don’t need to specify a lab or discussion time anymore. You pick the generic 999. Later on you will coordinate with the CS department for specific lab and discussion times. At least this is the case with CS61A and CSC8.
@kjake2000@Walter924@ProfessorPlum168 I see this question / statement flying around these forms a lot, so I wanted to get the truth about the 13.5 vs 17.5 cap during the nearest enrollment appointment. I just got a response from
James F. Collins
Assistant Registrar
University of California

Berkeley, CA 94720-5404 http://registrar.berkeley.edu
I asked him about the cap on units for frosh, during Phase 1, “is it 13.5 or 17.5?”. Here is his response:
“For new undergraduate students the enrollment limits are 17.5 units during New Student Enrollment, and either 19.5 or 20.5 during the Adjustment Period depending on the student’s college. Only continuing students have Phase 1 and 2 enrollment periods–the former before new students enroll, and the latter after.”
(He slanted and “bolded” the words that I took into xx, since I can’t figure how to bold stuff here.)
@ElenaParent I’m not at my kid’s computer now but IIRC when you import the classes from the planner one by one, is that where the validation can occur?
@ProfessorPlum168 The message I copy-pasted was seen AFTER the classes are imported from planner. The idea, I guess, was to make sure nothing overlaps schedule-wise? I am under impression this cannot be done one a one-by-one basis, this is a “basket deal”… Still puzzled. And the time to pressing the “enroll” button is ticking down.
Congrats, @kjake2000 ! My son got three out of four, one waitlisted. But it seems he has to be in it, it is jsut that crash of CalCentral that doesn’t allow to process stuff properly.
My kid has a lab that is waitlisted…anyone know if it makes more sense to take a lab at a less convenient time that is Open, or to waitlist for the time that he really wanted?
