Is it guaranteed you will get a roommate you requested? if not what are the chances? and what if their different majors?
Requested roommates aren’t 100% guaranteed, but not impossible. I have friends that chose each other and got put as roommates but others didn’t. Also, it doesn’t matter if you have different majors as long as you’re in the same Undergraduate College (i.e SSO, ITS, HDV, etc).
Great question. Here’s the process:
-
Until May 1: Admitted freshman students fill out their New Student Preferences form on SOLAR, ranking the six Undergraduate Colleges. You can major in anything and be in any of the UGCs; you can find more details, including videos, at ucolleges.stonybrook.edu/newstudent.
-
May 15ish: UGC assignments are made; there are about 400-450 freshmen in each College.
-
Summer: Details are still to come on this, but there’s a form over the summer where you’ll be able to list a preferred roommate. If your preferred roommate is NOT in the same UGC is you, you won’t be housed together, because each UGC is housed in a different quad. Your best bet is to use Inside Stony Brook and the students you meet at Orientation in July to find folks you’re compatible with and request them at that time. And no, there’s no guarantees, because there are still a lot of variables in the housing assignment process.
Hope this helps!

so may 15ish, when we know our UCG , what if my friend and I have diff UGCs? is it set or can we change?
It’s pretty set at that point. Your best bet would be to rank them in the same order when you submit it; that’s going to give you the best shot at being together.

I thought this was going to be a thread about your roommate wanting to get a job.
