How does the College Board justify...

charging like $9 to report an SAT score?

I'm sure they just email a database file to the university admissions office. AND it is probably automated. *** is up with this obscene profit margin?

i agree! collegeboard rips us off :(

They can charge whatever they desire since they run the SAT. This is capitalism at its best.

the funniest part is that they claim to b a non-profit organization

At all of the info. sessions at colleges that I have attended, most have admitted that cb is one big scam.

Especially that rush-report service.

You are welcome to found a competing service. ACT already has.

collegeboard is the marketing arm of a consortium of colleges.

ACT barely counts as a counter for the SAT. Sure the ACT costs less, but yet countless peopel are still paying 55 dollars to take the SAT. ANd ACT do not have subject tests. The non profit organization is crap. We are literally paying money to suffer through 4 hour tests. Let's not mention the amount of money they make off their blue book

^I don't understand your argument that the ACT does not have subject tests?
So what? That's actually a major positive imo.

If I were the Educational Testing Service, here's how I would justify it:

"We have a staff of thousands of people and we must maintain a 400 acre complex. Charging money for these services is necessary if we want the SAT to continue to be administered."

And if you're wondering, the ETS really does have a 400 acre complex.

AND ACT charges almost as much.

ACT is 30 dollars. I thought the SAT was like 55? I could be wrong. I'm saying that the ACT doesn't have subject tests is good for the collegeboard. Colleges require subject tests. Who else are you going to pay to take them?

I think the SAT is around $40. add $20 for a late fee though

(approximate figures, I'm guessing ETS makes it a little less round to squeeze a few more bucks out of you)

kevin- not one of my schools requires subject tests so long as my act is w/ writing... and I'm applying to several top 15 schools.

Collegeboard is non-profit so that it doesn't have to release its book/financial records to the public. Pretty brilliant, imo.

lol. but i'm just saying a lot of schools require them anyways. I'm not saying every college requires them

Nonprofit organizations still have to file information returns to the IRS.

what about the fee waivers?

It would be nice for colleges to allow SAT scores to be sent from high schools. My SAT scores (including W) were on the transcript my school sent to each college I applied to, and I still had to pay to have them sent to each school.

What you're paying for is credibility. The prices seem low compared to the value of getting into your favorite college.
