How does the ELC work?

Hi! I was wondering how the ELC eligibility works. I heard that it guarantees that you get into a UC school, but how does that work?

i.e. If i apply to UCSD, UCLA, and UC Berkeley, does that mean i will get into one of those schools for sure? or will i just be guaranteed any UC? Thanks

If you are eligible (top 4% of your HS, based on 10-11 UC GPA), you are guaranteed a lower tier UC, basically UCR and UCM. ELC may help slightly at other schools, though it probably won't mean much as a ton of applicants applying to the top schools are more than likely ELC eligible too.

You'd wish that the guarantee was made to the ones you apply to... if that was the case, people would only apply to one UC and get in with 0% failure.

So if you are interested in doing ELC, be sure to keep an eye out regarding a release form near the end of junior year. They're not allowed to send your GPA to the UCs without permission, though some schools do so anyway.

I was guaranteed UCI for ELC, and consequently applied there as a safety. ELC will help you in all UC admissions though.

Vu, honestly, Cal could have been your safety >:{

So if you qualify for ELC does that mean you still have to apply to a "lower-tier school"? Or does that mean that if you get rejected from other UC schools you'll have a place at UCR, Merced etc.?

I'm basically asking if I can avoid paying an application fee for a lower-tier school if I qualify for ELC.

I want to know the same thing as Federation asked. Also, is there a website that explains the ELC more in depth? Thanks

If you don't get into the UC's you applied to you will be guaranteed a spot in the UC system. This year the ELC's were put into UCI.

Before you apply, you will get a letter from the school you were ELC'd into, so obviously you would apply to that particular school. That ELC letter is pretty much your acceptance letter, given you don't screw up senior year.

So yes, if you were rejected from all the other UCs, you still have a spot at the UC you got ELC from.

http://www.ucop.edu/sas/elc/ <- that's the ELC site.

This year UCSB also took all ELC students.

You are guaranteed a spot by ELC, but you still have to apply to accept that spot.

from the UC website:

"Student Ranking Process

UC expects that the high school principal will be responsible for overseeing the student ranking process.

Ranking Method

UC makes no recommendation regarding the GPA schools use in ranking students; this is truly a local decision. Some high schools rank their top students based on GPA in academic or UC-approved coursework. There is no "wrong" way to rank your students for the ELC program as long as your ranking identifies your top students. For the purposes of the ELC evaluation, UC bases the GPA on all UC-approved courses taken in the 10th and 11th grade, with an additional point for UC-approved honors courses.

Students Who Have Not Taken College Preparatory Classes

Schools should identify the top academic students at their school for submission. If a school considers Special Ed and/or ESL students to be their top students, they should be submitted. However, if they do not consider these students to be their top students, the school may wish to identify a method for choosing their top students that identifies whom the school considers the top students. For example, some high schools rank their students for submission to the ELC program based on college preparatory work or work in UC-approved courses only. Once a high school has ranked its students, it should submit all requested transcripts, and UC's trained evaluators will make all eligibility determinations."

so it looks like the high school decides by whatever means they choose who the top 4 % are, and those names are submitted to UC. UC then takes that group and evaluates those students based on their UC GPA to make a final determination.

Has anyone rec'd ELC notification yet for fall 07 applicants?

You should have already received and turned in the release form months ago, but I remember I got the actual letter of acceptance from UCI in September/October.
