How does Tulane tell you about merit scholarships?

Received news today that D selected for the DSA as well. Very exciting! Congrats to all of you as well!

noveldad- It is not unusual for a student to receive the DSA and not get into the Honor's program. DSA generally goes by SAT scores, while the Honor's program uses GPA. I know several students that have one but not the other. As for the honor's program, if you are not admitted now you can be admitted after the first semester. I don't remember the GPA required for the Honor's program, but it is very doable after first semester ir the Freshman year.

My son's letter didn't refer to any other scholarship....

so can i basically assume that i did not get any scholarship if i have not received anything yet. I live in northern alabama. and if i do not get any scholarship this go around is it possible to receive any from tulane later

everyone i have heard of has received the distinguished scholars one and i am only in the running for founders(1350 sat).. anyone get a founders scholarship yet? or should i also assume i am out of the running aswell

Tangerine - there is no hard fast rule or cut off based on the SAT scores for the DSA or Founders as far as I understand. They are both based on the entire application not simply the SAT result. My D did not have a 1350 SAT though it was in the ballpark. So don't assume yet that you are out of the running. :)

My son just received his letter today and it too was dated the 27th. We live in Ohio. I do wish I knew about whether or not this scholarship eliminates him from the honors consideration. He's considering other schools though so this is just the beginning.

psatmadness:
Since the Dean's Honor Scholarship required a seperate project application I do not think receiving the DSA eliminates you from consideration for the Dean's Honors - However - if awarded the Dean's Honors you of course forfeit the DSA. You are not eligible to receive both. This is only my interpretation based on the paperwork etc. and the financial aid info. Good Luck to your son :)

Thanks Maryland mom!!! Good luck to you too.

Two things:
1) soccerrulz, call the Tulane office to double check on scholarships. My S's scholarship notification was nearly lost in the mail. I say "nearly" because the entire sealed envelope w/letter had inadvertently been stuck inside another student's notification, and mailed to her! By coincidence, the student happened to live in our area, found us in the phone book, called, and we met her to claim the letter. If it happened once...
2) psatmadness, my S's scholarship letter also did not allude to other scholarships. Perhaps the letter was revised this year - ?

tulane states in their prospectus that students will only be able to receive one form of merit scholarships from the University, if they qualify for multiple school scholarships, the student receives the one that grants the most money. So i guess getting the DSA wont disqualify anyone for the Dean's one.

It also seems like Tulane just notified the DSA recipients...all the posts here are for the DSA...Tulane awards just as many Founders...perhaps the Founders awards will be a little later...

Re: # of DSA and Founders awarded:

From a postcard my S received this fall from Undergrad Admissions:

"Distinguished Scholar Awards - Tulane plans to award more than 2,000 four year scholarships..........." (five-year for School of Architecture Students)
"Founders Scholarships - In addition to the previously-mentioned merit scholarships, Tulane plans to award apprx9imately 1,300 four-year Founders Scholarships..." (five-year for School of Architecture Students)
"For more information, please call Tulane's Office of Admission at (800) 873-9283..."

We got that postcard too - but given the class size, I read it to mean that they will award that many of each scholarship at the whole school, not to the entering class....

wish, I stand corrected! I looked in the viewbook and here's a quote:
"DSA and Founders Scholarships...are awarded by Tulane to approximately 700 entering freshmen."

Does Tulane automatically consider applicants for scholarships? or must you apply separately for them?

vtoodler, go to http://www.tulane.edu/~finaid/scholarships.shtml

so has anyone gotten founders yet?

Just called the admissions office and was told that only some of the scholarship letters have gone out. The woman who answered the question said that 1) they try to work through each app as quickly as they can; 2) it depends some on who is working on it; and 3) don't be concerned about not receiving a letter yet - and don't be until the end of January!

thnanks so much for the info.. its very helpful
