How does UM calcluate GPA?

Do they just disregard freshman grades? On these threads people state their schools GPA and then their U of M GPA. What's the difference?

Thanks.

Their school's GPA is their GPA as their school reports it. Their U of M GPA is how U of M recalculates it:

U of M only takes academic core classes into account for the GPA. They disregard +'s and -'s so that all A's=4, B's=3, C's=2, etc.

Do they include freshman grades in the calculations?

Nope. they dont.

Okay, so bear with me. My daughter is OOS, legacy (dad), 4.0 (uw) soph and junior year GPA,30 ACT, good ec's, good work experience, excellent teacher recs and great essays.
What do you think her chances are?

I'd appreciate responses. She's a wreck.

Thanks!

Oh, one more thing. She took one AP class as a junior (Calc AB) Senior year she'll be taking 4 more(Stats, Gov, Psych, Spanish). All honors classes throughout high school.

Thanks again.

I'd say probably a match/sliiiiight reach depending on her courseload and cuz she is OOS.

Courseload

Junior Year Physics H
Spanish IV H
AP Calc AB
Latin I
US History H
English H

GPA 4.0 (uw)

Senior Year

AP Gov
AP Spanish
AP Stats
AP Psych
Latin II
English IV H

Still match/slight reach?

Thanks!

I think she's a match...almost a safety if she can up that ACT score. What are her extracurriculars?

Summer Day Camp Counselor - Wilton, CT YMCA - Full time - Summers grades 10 and 11.

I know, she hasn't cured cancer.....

Those sounds great. With 20 hours a week working and 6+ hours a tutoring/teaching, that's a huge time commitment...and she still has a 4.0. Very safe match.

Yeah when you said only 1 AP I thought her schedule may be weak, but that's def. not the case.

Also, if there weren't that many APs offered at her school, that's not her fault.

As long as she applies early she should get in. Maybe she could retake the ACT to go up a point or two just to be safe...probably not needed.

Actually, there are tons of APs offered. She knew she would be working lots of hours junior year so she decided not to take more than one. But, as noted above, she's taking 4 Senior year.

Thanks, you guys have been really helpful.
