How early should I apply for college?

I am currently a junior with a few weeks left until Summer officially starts. I heard that it is best to apply for a college as early as possible around the time senior year begins. My concern is that I have not yet taken the SAT/ACT, but I am set to take it on June 6/June 2. Is it better to send in my college application early regardless of how well or poorly I do on these tests? Or would it be better if I take the SAT/ACT at least twice as soon as possible and then send in an application a little later on during the year? I know that there is a chance of being deferred or sent to the Summer term if I apply early, but at the same time it would be unfortunate to get rejected due to the test scores. I plan on attending FSU, but it would also be nice to know how other colleges would think of this.

You’ll have your results a few weeks after taking the SAT, long before they start accepting applications for the 2016/2017 school year.

No need to decide now-- wait and see how you do!

I am hearing that admission to FSU has been getting harder in the past years, especially as the university has gone up in ranking and is competing very well with UF in many departments. I don’t think you can say a lot before having your first set of SAT/ACT scores.

From my own experience I do not remember if the application was a work in progress where you can add information over a period of time before truly submitting but I would guess that this is the case for most universities nowadays. It certainly is true for the Common App.

Right now, it is not possible to apply and I could not see an obvious date but would guess that most Florida universities without rolling admission would open their window on or after August 1 for the following year.

Good luck on your upcoming tests.

If you take SAT/ACT in June then you will get results by July and can prep some more in the summer and retake in the fall. You should ask your junior teachers now for recommendation letters, so they can give them to guidance counselor to put in your file before school ends. The school will have to finalize grades and be able to send your transcript when you apply. So August or September would probably be the earliest depending on scores and if you are retaking in fall. You should think about some essay ideas in the summer and make a list of extracurricular activities and honors/awards you want to mention in your application.

Focusing on FSU

It has two admission dates,
October 15, 2015, with a decision date of December 9th, 2015
January 13, 2016, with a decision date of March 16th, 2016.

You can submit updated SAT and ACT scores for test taken after the Admission dates (but before the decision date). For example, for the 1/13/2016 admission date, the January SAT and February ACT are the latest tests that FSU will use in the admission process for applicants applying for the summer or fall term.

You should take each exam more than once, since FSU uses the highest subscores to create the ACT composite and SAT total. So plan on taking them again in the fall and if you plan on applying for the 1/13/2016 date, again no later than January/February.

Most of the other Florida public universities are on rolling admissions. I would also plan on re-taking the SAT and/or ACT in the fall.

Good Luck!!

Thanks for the helpful info guys… I really appreciate it
