How early should you apply for early action?

Most of my application has been sent - transcript, application, essay, recommendations, etc. My counselor advised me to wait until October to send in my ACT scores. However, I've heard that the later the applications come in, the lesser the chances of acceptance. If this is the case, is October too late?

I don’t know about chances of acceptance being less, but I see absolutely no reason to wait.

I don’t understand why you should wait until October to send in your ACT scores?
Are you going to retake the ACT soon?

Just send it all now.

you may continue to take the ACT and update the scores if they are higher.
However, I would not have them sent automatically to Tulane after Tulane already has at least one of your ACT scores.
I would make sure that the updated ACT scores were indeed an improvement over the last ACT test.
This will cost more money but I would not want a lower score automatically sent anywhere.

But don’t you have to send ALL your ACT scores to Tulane, regardless of whether they are low or high?

I believe ACT lets you score select. That said, if you current scores are good, get them in! The sooner, the better. If they will continue to notify applicants within a few weeks of the receipt of the completed application, there is nothing better than an acceptance under your belt! My s’s Tulane acceptance came in October. I remember it like it was yesterday! As others said, if your scores improve on a later testing, you can submit that then.

…But don’t you have to send ALL your ACT scores to Tulane, regardless of whether they are low or high?…

No.
The ACT lets you send to several schools free of charge if you select the schools you would like to have them sent to on testing day.
However, you do not have to select any schools for them to be sent to. Later, if you want to send them to Tulane, you may do so but it will not be free. The cost is not very much though

…I believe ACT lets you score select.…

Only schools allow you to score select. The ACT office does not.
Tulane does not allow
score selecting

If you send Tulane all your ACT scores, they will simply place the best score in your application packet.
Having said that, I would only send a second ACT score that is cumulatively the same or higher than the first score. If the ACT score is the same but the math, science and reading are higher, I would send the new score in with the higher math, science and reading scores. If those same 3 scores were lower, I would not update the application.

My S submitted his early action single decision last fall just before the deadline. Didn’t matter, he got in. BTW, at his school, all the EA applicants to all school seemed to do it just under the deadline.
