I'm a freshman.
My friend and I have been planning on getting an apartment this spring semester. He's a spring admit and will arrive at Berkeley next year in January.

How easy is it to cancel my contract and find someone to take my place?
Is this form I should send? http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/policies/Res_Hall_Cancellation_fillable.pdf

If so, when should I send one in, and when will I be notified?

I'd appreciate some help from those who have actually gone through the process.
Thanks, guys!

Only half of the people I know who tried to cancel their housing contract succeeded. So I’d say it’s doable, but you should be prepared in case you can’t.

Thanks for your input? But wouldn’t there be an influx of spring admits who are more than willing to take my place. I’m pretty sure there is a waitlist, right?

wow. want to leave the dorm that early? I agree. there will be spring admits who will be willing to take your place. I think the deadline to apply for housing is around October for spring semester. maybe you should communicate with one of the RD (not your ra, but your residential director) or one of the people in the housing building (the giant building next to crossroad) about it.

Sorry, didn’t mean to put a “?” on my previous post. Haha. Thanks, Chris!

Well, due to the costs, I originally wanted to get an apartment with my high school friend, but he got admitted for spring. Sorry if I came off as a pessimist, but my leaving is mainly due to financial reasons.

Thanks for the help, coopebble!

Send it in asap. My roommate last year was able to cancel hers (they notified her in December), and she had sent in the form in the beginning of the year.

Thanks, mochi! Did your roommate find a replacement? And was she mainly leaving due to financial or personal reasons?

Yeah, there was a replacement (spring admit) and we got a new roommate for spring. And she was leaving for financial reasons.

Did your roommate have to find a replacement herself, or was one assigned?

people leaving the housing in mid year don’t have to find the replacement, one is assigned from unsatisfied requests for rooms. Not only do you have the normal spring admit and small number who leave the school entirely, but this year with the higher out of state demographics, Cal is very short of space to fit all the requestors. With the shortfall at all time highs (I think, at least it is quite high compared to recent years), there shouldn’t be a serious risk if you plan to leave the dorms in mid year. The earlier your request, the quicker you will be released from the commitment, but probably almost everyone asking will be okay this year.

Thanks, rider! I’ll send one in soon to the RD.
