Odd that Deerfield’s is due a day or two ahead of everyone else’s. It gets it out of the way, though.

But still, a Friday the 13th due date? Yuck!

I was wondering if the essays had to be arriving at exeter by the 15th or do you have to send it in the mail by then? Also can you fax the essays or email?

@helloel - oh my goodness i know how you feel! i felt the same, but strangely relieved when i submitted my choate application. last two applications going out today or tomorrow!

hey guys small, trivial question for those applying to Hotchkiss. On the application part for essays, you’re asked to fill in your native language, and other languages you know, right? Should I list English(first language and more proficient) or Chinese (slightly less proficient, but the language of my ancestors) as my native language? haha i know it’s really trivial, but I was just wondering! thanks!

Not to sound rude but can you answer my question like today because this could affect if I send in my application on time or not so please answer
From a stressed Applicant

so i read in an earlier post that you should review and check your essay if you’re submitting it on Gateway because they cut your essay off after the word limit. Problem is I can not find the button to preview them. If someone could help, that would be wonderful.

When you check the stupid check box and save your essays, the next screen will present you with two buttons: one to go back to editing, and one to get the preview, where you can check the result.

And yes, the UI on that web site leaves quite a bit to be desired. It’s better than dealing with non-existent typewriters (as I had to for my daughter 3 several years ago) though…

@eve: Doesn’t Exeter use some sort of online portal for apps? If sending hard copy, they should be postmarked by the deadline…don’t know if they let you float until Tuesday 1/17 due to the 15th being on a Sunday and the 16th being a Federal Holiday.

LAST MINUTE ADVICE TO ALL: Write your essays in a word processing program like Word, then use the character/word count tool to make sure you’re under the limit…note that last year we found that Word’s count tool did not sync with the Gateway portal…Word would say it was under character count (including spaces) and Gateway would still cut a few words/characters off the end.

Yes, having your conclusion cut off would be very, very terrible. I checked, and my entire Hotchkiss last essay was not there! So I removed the spaces so it looks like this:

vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvdddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd

Yup, sure, bad formatting, but at least it’s all there! :)

@blehjoints I think native language means the language that you learned first. Chinese would be considered a foreign language since you learned it later on in life. :)

SevenDad: I was going to send it in on sat.(today) i cant find a place to send it in on the exeter page but do u know if they accept fax if not i would mail it. also in the letter would they prefer if I have it in five visible paragraphs or in one large essay with an indent:
nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. (except more lines of course)

for example paragraph above there was an indent but wen it publised to the forum it dissapeared lol just so u know

my essay is about 510 words but it fits just fine in gateway when i preview it. I suppose some people just use bigger words/more lines because of extra paragraphs? Is there any need to find away to get rid of 10 words or would that be fine given that it fits well into the gateway preview? thanks!

sabbington - If it fits, don’t worry. 500 words is just an estimate of what they expect will fit. As long as it all fits in the space, you’re fine.

thanks so much dodgersmom:)

sabbington; sometimes the schools give a character amount along with the word limit. Use the character one, it’s more accurate. :D

thanks aaralyn. just gateway for me. actually managed about 560 words on the page^^ good luck to you!

You want to apply on time or you get stuck in the second round
