I saw a previous thread about this, but it was from '07, and things might've changed since then.

Very near your local library’s speed.

I don’t know what library speed is meant to be, but here is a speediest.net report from just now. Done on wifi on campus. Pretty insanely fast. <a href=“Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test”>Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test;

my brother goes to rice and he says that the wifi there is really fast. he always complains about the internet we have at home when he comes to visit hahah

Mmm, excellent. That’s more than double my speed at home on the downloads (and waaay higher than my upload speed). Thanks!

From my experience, the wireless connection at Rice is far faster than my already quite fast connection at home.

The wired connection that I use for my desktop is ridiculously fast. I couldn’t ask for more. Actually, having a faster connection wouldn’t even do much, because if anything’s slowing me down as is, it’s on the other end.

Could you possibly post a speed test with the wired connection? I’m curious. :P

Wow, that’s amazing. Thanks!

am I the only one who feels this way? the only connection that works matter-of-factly for me is the ethernet cable, which is amazing. the secured Rice Owls network that you need your student ID for almost never works for me. in fact, the visitor network works 10 times better on my computer. but then about half the time it takes a dozen tries for me to get to the web authentication/accept screen. and i have a pretty new macbook…but when the visitor network works it’s blazing fast

^ I agree. Rice Owls was definitely not as fast as expected or advertised. In addition, the WAP in some of the buildings would restart and re-issue IP addresses for some reason.

We actually had our own wireless network in our suite with a dual ethernet input running on a different band from the WAP’s in the building

I haven’t experienced too many problems with the Rice Owls network. Sometimes I have to disconnect and reconnect if I move to a different building, but that’s not all that often, isn’t much of an inconvenience, and hasn’t happened to me recently.

I do know plenty of people who haven’t ever been able to get it to work for them, though, so it’s definitely hit-or-miss, and I’d recommend bringing an Ethernet cable so that you can get a better connection while you’re in your room even if you’re going to be using a laptop.
