How generous is UChicago with merit scholarships to middle-class people? I was really wondering, because I would love to go there but without a scholarship it doesn't really seem too feasible :/

I was wondering the same thing, I just got accepted too, but my financial aid award seemed extremely low and I am also middle class, I wonder if we will have to try to beg from admissions or something, because right now the debt just seems overwhelming.

I mean they say that you’re already in consideration for merit-based scholarships just by submitting the commonapp…however, that puts u in contention with every single kid who applied other than the upper class people lol

Yeah, I mean it just seems that there has to be some way to make it affordable, I don’t mean free, but I just think having over 50grand in loans would not be good

haha i hope when my FA package comes it doesnt say no grants…that would really ruin my day lol. I’m in-state for UofM, so I mean its kind of a tough choice considering how much cheaper UofM will be without a merit scholarship from Uchicago lol

Ironically I have the same thing going being instate for OSU, idk about you, but its hard for me because i am torn between like following my dream and taking the wonderful opportunity and being practical and realistic

You can appeal to the financial aid office for a new package.

It was answered by Grace or Uchicago, there are no merit based scholarships this year, other than some specific ones to the students from the Chicago area.

@artloverplus: Really?!?! O_o
The website says that there still are and so does the commonapp :/

This was the answer from Uchicago on 9/12/2011:

I stand correted, there are no more full tuition merit scholarships to most of the students.

Okay, so no full tuition scholarships, but there are still scholarships, however slim my chances of getting one are lol. So pretty much I have to sit here with my fingers crossed until april comes. I’ve heard that Uchicago doesn’t give out many, so I really hope I get absurdly lucky and end up with a 10k or 15k one :/

I think for class '14 of all the posters on CC there was only one or two who said they won a $10K scholarship. No one on cc claims that a 15K scholarship was won. Back in '14, the full tuition scholarship was still avaliable, only to 10 students or so.

When do we found out about merit scholarships if we were admitted EA?

Well from what I’ve heard there wasnt a 15k scholarship back then, atleast none that I know of. I’m hoping that by cutting the OOS Full Tuition scholarships, there will be more of the lesser scholarships.

@artloversplus: yea that really seems to confirm what I’ve heard. Merit scholarships at UC are hard to come by and few in number…

I got a 10k per year merit scholarship this year so they are definitely still around. I think someone else on the results thread said they got a merit scholarship as well. I believe they award merit scholarships periodically from now until April.

yeah they said results come on a rolling basis in april, but the numbers of scholarships from what i’ve heard are low and, obviously, tough to get since its such a talented applicant pool

UMT,

can you describe how did you get the scholarship? it must have been the essay, there must have been 2400/4.0 applicants all over the place.

I’m pretty sure you can’t pin the scholarships down to one specific area, just as you can’t pin down the admissions process to one set formula.

I know a number of people in my class (2015) who are on 5k, 10k, and 15k scholarships. They’re out there.

@artloversplus: yeah, I would like to know as well lol.

@dunbar: yes a school can provide regional scholarships since certain alumni who fund the scholarships may want to see that money allocated as a scholarship to a specific region. So technically it is possible. The people who you know must have an amazing record lol, from all my sources they aren’t exactly all that plentiful. :/

I don’t think any of those were regional. The university offers incremental scholarships in order to attract students they want to enroll. I only applied RD last year, so I can’t speak to the EA process, but I know for the RD round scholarships were offered with the letter of admission and also in the following weeks. And though I’m sure most students do not have these scholarships, I’ve been surprised by the amount of people I’ve come across who do (especially considering that the admissions process is rarely the subject of conversation). I have a 5k scholarship, for instance, and I’ll be the first to admit that my HS record was far from “amazing.”

PM me if you have any more questions or feel that your ability to afford UChicago hinges on this matter.
