How good is a 34?

Yeah so my composite score is a 34, but I really don't know how good that is for colleges. (i heard it was 99th percentile or something, but what the hell does that mean?) and my friend got a 35 and he's really smart, so I'm guessing it's good - but how good?

what sort of SAT score does it compare to? How will top colleges (HYPS) view this?

it means you aren't getting into college.get out, troll.

yea....i made a similar thread on this like a couple minutes ago. im actually pretty curious myself although i think that 34 is the 75th percentile at most of the upper echelon of universities

what about a 33? lol

just a notch down i guess

I think once you get to a certain level, you really need to stop worrying about scores and focusing on different things. A college won't reject you because you got a 33 rather than a 34 or a 34 rather than a 35. After you've proved that you can handle the material, colleges look at other factors like GPA, ECs, Essays, Recommendations, and Character.

What blondie is referring to is the 32 cap off mark- once you reach that score you're not going to be rejected because of it- it will be for some other reason.

Here's one conversion (but it gives a bit more credit to the act than most other conversion charts do):
http://collegeapps.about.com/od/satactandotherexams/a/comparesatact.htm

it definitely gives more credit to the act.

a 34 on the act is a 2300 according to this chart.

a 34 on the act according to the princeton review chart is a 2260.

a 34, according to the University of California system, is 2280-2330. (wikipedia)

how hard is it to get above a 2300 on the SAT I? I debating whether or not I should take the SAT on saturday, and I've never taken the SAT I before...

^Well in that case it doesn't give more weight in relation to the UC chart.

But in terms of your question, the SAT may be easier or harder for you. Or it could be the same.

I know someone with a 2280 SAT, but can't even get a 30 ACT.
Then there's me- 2070 SAT with a 33 ACT (130-150 point difference...)

'How will HYPS view this?'

If you come froma competitive school district, 34 is probably an average ACT score to send. If you come from a regular-type school , 34 should be in pretty good running .

A 34 would generally be considered higher than that of the average white or asian applicant to harvard, and well above black and hispanic.

I see it this way:

30 is a very good score. Many are accepted at top schools with this.

32 is a good improvement from a 30. At about 32+, there becomes little difference.

Once you hit 34, your ACT score won't matter. 34+ proves mastery of the ACT and its concepts.

1920 SAT 34 ACT here... The ACT you answer the questions, no strategy gimmicks like on the SAT.

yeah, it is a much more straightforward test.

I do wish we had more breaks though - by the time I got around to science, I had almost no energy left ... pure guessing got me through the last science passage

it's also really long (or at least seems like it, because of the aforementioned dearth of breaks)

Oh, you don't need to retake/take the SAT. That satisfy you?

You guys are way too kind to trolls. If this guy got a 34 I am sure he would know what 99th percentile is.

Maybe he just got lucky...

haha i'm not a troll, and I do know what 99th percentile means.
I just wanted to know what a 34 would mean to HYP, b/c thats what I really care about

a 34 is good anywhere so save your energy to worry about something else

a 34 is right at the 75%ile at most of these schools
