How good is UCLA's BizEcon major? What does it focus on?

I don't really know what this major is really about, but I am thinking of majoring in it since I want a major that has a mix of both econ and business. However, I still don't know the details about this major yet even after looking at the website, reading the description of the major and looking at the classes that i have to take for this major. SOme questions that i have are: What are the differences between bizecon and regular econ or regular business major? What does it focus on really? What kinds of things will I learn or will i get out of this major?
Any kind of information would be appreciated.

hey Adam.
UCLA's econ major focuses on pure economics. Unless you decide to minor in accounting, you do not get to touch any aspect of business. Just pure economics.

UCLA's Business Economics, on the other hand, allows you to go deep into accounting (five required accounting courses) and you get to pick two business related courses, including Entrepreneurship, Investment, Finance, Organization, that are primarily for BizEcon students.

So the difference is, if you are an Econ major, you get chance to take variety of pure econ classes. If you are a BizEcon major, while you don't get to take much of econ class, you get fair balance between Business (Accounting) and Economics, and get a slight taste of other Business area you want to study.

which major do u think will prepare me better in the business field or will most likely get me a higher paying jobs econ at cal or bizecon at ucla?

It depends what business field you are talking about. Do you plan to go for marketing or real estate? If that's the case, neither will actually prepare you for it since those are exclusive to business major where you concentrate on soft skills such as communicating and leadership skill.

If you are talking about accounting and finance, then I say both are good. Both have their own upsides.

The upside for UCLA is.. unlike Cal's Econ, you actually have chance to take courses related to the area so you will have better idea of what you are preparing for. Accounting is among the most popular choice of career for BizEcon alumni, and most people are able to finish their CPA requirement by the time they graduate. You won't see many people going into Finance field (that is, investment bank) not because UCLA's not good enough but simply because people in So.Cal are not very drawn to the field (quite contrary to the people up in the Northeast where banking seems to be everyone's dream job).

On the other hand, while you won't actually take any class related to finance/accounting for Cal's econ (if you were to solely follow its curriculum and nothing else), the upside is its location. San Francisco is the Wall Street of the West. If you've actually done some research, you'll be able to see that most of the western financial firms are headquartered in the Bay Area. And for whatever reason, the income level at the Bay Area is slightly higher than So.Cal. Also, if you look at their career website, you'll be able to see that quite a few Econ majors got into finance area.

So overall, choose either. Both are good choices, and alumni from both school and their major usually get the job they want. The only difference will be the location of where you'll be working.

Note: Although the Bay Area has higher income than So. Cal, it also has higher cost of living. ;)

thanx... that is very informative. i will be applying to both schools this fall. at first, i thought i was sure that i would go to cal if i got accepted there, but now, having a gf who will not likely go to cal, circumstances have changed. i wanna go to a closer school yet i dont wanna sacrifice my education. =(

well.. people always say if you give up a school for a gf you are an idiot... BUT this is not Harvard vs CSU. Both Cal and UCLA are equally high-calibar school (regardless of what some of the elitist Cal fanatics say in the forum) and no matter where you go, you will end up well.

btw, if you want to get into business, why not apply to Haas instead of econ?

i already asked my professor about it and he said that econ major would be a greater foundation for me and will prepare me better for mba. Plus, I really like economics but i want to use the knowledge in business field. And my chance of getting into haas is very slim.
