How great is ChemEng at UT Austin?

Can someone tell me what's it like? I've heard that Austin's Cockrell School of Engineering has 5-year program instead of 4 - is this true, and why is it so? Furthermore, if you compare it to Wisc Madison, which one is better academically and socially (and by what margin)? Thank you very much!

I’m a ChemE at UT and its a 4 year program (I’m going to complete it in 3.5 years). UT Austin is definitely socially better and academically respectable- One prime example of the social scene at UT is that this weekend is RoundUp Weekend where all the greek organizations throw a huge party open to all students with an ID where various performers such as Mike Jones, Slim Thug, etc. perform. Its awesome!

So it is a 4-years program? That’s a huge relief! I’ve set my mind on Austin at first, but the rumor of having a 5-year program casted doubt on me. How are the professors there?

Their pretty good especially the advisers. During your freshman year you will have CHE 210 with Professor Swinnea (who is great at teaching, but can boring if you’ve already done Java programming during HS) and CHE 102 with our head adviser, Kelly McQueary (She’s a huge sports nut- She keeps up with UMich Basketball, Baseball, and Football and ALWAYS has her NCAA bracket done during March Madness).
