First off I know that all AP’s are challenging, but I just want to get a general idea for how challenging.
I’m a sophomore and at my school they have us pick our courses for junior year next month. I know it seems very early but i go to a big public high school so maybe thats why…
Anyways the only AP I’m taking this year is AP World hist. and I don’t find it that challenging/time consuming.
AP Courses:
AP US
AP Human Geography
AP physics 2
AP Hug
(also w/ non-ap’s French IIII, half year Model UN, and had year Latin American Studies)
Thank you for any advice regarding these courses
I’m taking 4 or 5 APs sophomore year, I think if you just keep up with your work and assignments while leaving some room for community service, then you will be fine.
What’s AP Hug?? LOL what a title.
APUSH tends to be quite difficult, so check with older classmates whether it’s doable for a sophomore.
Don’t you have a math class?
The rest of your schedule sounds great.
Have you taken a physics class before? AP Physics 2 is relatively easy, but it’s going to be difficult if you’ve never taken a physics class before. I’m in AP Physics 1 right now, and 75% of my class is struggling (even some of the pretty intelligent, hard-working kids).
Hmm well I’d say it depends on you and the course. For instance, if you’re a physics buff, AP Physics will be a walk in the park, while if you’re not, it’ll be pretty darn hellish. If you have a good but laid-back teacher, the class and the exam will probably be easier than if the teacher doesn’t like to inflate grades (i.e. average is kept at a C despite the bias of the sample towards higher-achieving students) or if the teacher can’t teach.
I’d say think about an AP class as a high-school version of an introductory (the lowest level) college course.
I am taking AP Human Geography this year, and for me at least, it is not difficult at all. You can guess the definition of most words just by looking at their roots and making informed guesses. It is still a fun class that I enjoy very much.
Agreeing with the others: it depends on the teacher and how you like the subject. Physics is actually not a joke- I know some very clever & hardworking students who did great in the class and very poorly on the AP itself - which came down to a bad course. Human Geography is generally seen as one of the very easiest APs overall; as another poster said, if the teacher is good APUSH is usually pretty straightforward (beware the teacher who bulks it up though).
Like said above, there are some points to address in your schedule.
First: APUSH is a hit or miss class, from what I’ve gathered here on CC. In some places, it can be difficult, and some places can have it as a ‘joke’ class. You want to check with the upperclassmen who have taken the class, just to gauge where it lies, and plan accordingly. For example, my HS’s APUSH class was taught by a guy who was a professor at a nearby university, in his spare time. He treated his APUSH class like a college course (which it should be), but the amount of workload was insane for me.
Second: AP HUG (as you call it) is normally regarded as an easy AP. Now, this may mean many colleges don’t really care much for it, and may not actually “boost” you. If you don’t care about that, then go ahead, by all means.
Third: Why Physics 2? Where’s Physics 1? If you’ve never taken a physics class, it might be a bit difficult, cause you’re taking an intermediate plunge into the unknown. If so, proceed with caution. Also, take AP Physics C senior year, if that’s the plan.
Fourth: You have no AP English/Lit/Language course? I don’t normally recommend them, but they can help you skip out on the writing requirements for college. I would have taken them if I had my mind in the right place back then.
3 AP courses seems to be the standard amount most take. However, your schedule’s difficulty thus far may permit for one more, depending on the severity level of your APUSH course. If you can, I suggest getting an AP English Language.
